Plans ...

You’ve made at least one over the course of a lifetime. Whether it’s simply deciding what to make for breakfast or where to go on the next vacation or devising a strategy for retirement, you’ve had to make a decision at some point, right?

What kind of planner are you? Are you the type of person that has no ultimate plan and kind of just lets things fall into place as they may? Or are you the person who meticulously plans out every little detail so that no T is left uncrossed?

Most importantly, have you stopped to consider what plan you’re subscribing to when it comes to life’s most pressing question: Where will I spend eternity?

There are only three plans, and you are buying into one whether you realize it or not.

No Plan

You might be the person who thinks that this life is all there is and that when you die, it’s over—end of story. Any talk of there being a divine being (God) is just hogwash nonsense. Rather than recognize a supreme maker of the universe, others have told you that this complex and vast world came into being by a series of random events. Over the course of time, humans (sophisticated apes) assigned various meanings to this pointless journey called life.

However, the Bible, which is God’s revelation to mankind, states that this world you operate in was made by Him, through Him, and for Him. Look around you! This world screams of it being the product of an intelligent Designer who has put laws, principles, and concepts into place by which the world is sustained.

God’s ultimate revelation is found in Jesus Christ.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.John 1:1

God’s Word is not the product of man’s imagination.

Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.2 Peter 1:20-21

No person can deny His all-knowing, all-powerful presence.

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”Psalm 14:1

Do Plan

Perhaps you are the person who believes in God as opposed to the one “with no plan.” You think of yourself as a good person. You may attend a church, synagogue, or mosque. You may volunteer your time at homeless shelters. You may have started a non-profit organization. You may be an influencer who motivates others to reach their goals. You’ve never been to jail. You believe aligning yourself with social justice causes is noteworthy. In other words, you think your good deeds will outweigh the times when you weren’t your best.

Belief in God is not enough.

You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!James 2:19

But let’s see how your “good deeds” stack up to God’s perfect standard the Ten Commandments aka The Moral Law.

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.James 2:10

For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.Romans 3:20

That white lie, or lustful look at someone, curse word, or distasteful thought about someone disqualifies you from being seen as “righteous” in the eyes of God.

Done Plan

Every human will have one of two eternal dwelling places: heaven or hell. Ultimately, there is only one plan that can secure eternal life in the presence of God: trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ. God is a perfect judge, and therefore sin must be dealt with. As you’ve read, all humans are guilty of sin, and therefore are anything but blameless when facing a holy God.

You cannot save yourself by being good.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.1 Timothy 1:15

Jesus Christ, God in human flesh, came into the world as a sacrifice to pay the penalty that you, a sinner, deserve.

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.2 Corinthians 5:21

Sorry, but you cannot earn what is a free gift.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

The No Plan and Do Plan lead to eternal separation from God. However, if you trust in Christ’s work on the cross, there is no punishment (Romans 8:1). Right before He took his final breath, Christ said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). In other words, the payment due for sin was paid in full. Done.

There is no better time than this very moment to believe and trust in the only plan God has made for redemption:

A “done” plan that Christ carried out—a plan that will not come back void.
