God’s Standard
Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect (Matthew 5:48).
The 10 Commandments
- You shall have no other gods before Me.
- You shall not make for yourself a carved image … you shall not bow down to them nor serve them.
- You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
- Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Honor your father and your mother.
- You shall not murder.
- You shall not commit adultery.
- You shall not steal.
- You shall not bear false witness (lie).
- You shall not covet.
What is sin?
We sin each time we break God’s moral law, His Commandments.
There is none righteous, no, not one… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:10,23).
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20).
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all (James 2:10).
Sin’s Penalty
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27).
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty (Exodus 34:7).
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23).
Each of us will die some day, but this verse is talking about spiritual death, or eternal separation from God in a place called Hell. That penalty is what each of us has earned (our wages) because of our sins.
No amount of good works, church attendance, money, or sacrifices can ever make up for, or take away, the sins we have committed.
And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire… And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Revelation 20:15,10)
God’s Love
The Lord is … not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed (1 Peter 2:24).
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit (1 Peter 3:18).
For He made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus was punished in your place!
Your Response
Repent:
God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent (Acts 17:30). To repent is to change your mind to agree with God’s assessment of your sin and the judgment it deserves.
The Lord Jesus said to His disciples that repentance and forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations (Luke 24:47). Will you now repent and receive forgiveness?
Receive:
But as many as received Him [Jesus Christ], to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name (John 1:12).
God wants you to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as the payment for your sin. When you accept this gift, you will become a child of God.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8,9).
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:36)
You can know for sure where you will spend eternity!
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
(1 John 5:13).
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
(John 3:16).
