Are you good enough for Heaven?

“I’m basically a good person.”

“God would never reject me.”

“Are you sure?”

“Okay, I’ve done a few stupid things in my life, but all the good I’ve done makes up for it, right?”

“Just what have you done to deserve to go to Heaven?”

“Well… I’m a good husband and father, I pay my taxes, and I eat leftover casseroles without complaint.”

“How does that compare with those who risk their lives trying to end starvation and disease in third world countries?”

“I might not have done that, but I make my kids clean their plate and brush their teeth after every meal.”

“What about the poor people in your city? What good have you done to help them?”

“Uh… I don’t have that many toothbrushes.”

“Okay, how about your own neighborhood? Are you doing everything you can to do good there?”

“Well… I think so.”

“Did you help the little old lady next door with her groceries, or were you in a hurry to catch the kickoff of a football game?”

“Hey, that’s my favorite team. How did you know about that?”

“Where did you draw the line in how good you need to be?”

“Well, I’ve got my standards.”

“But what about God’s standards?”

“-Gulp!- God’s standards?”

“The bible says… “Be perfect. Therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)”

“Perfect? Nobody’s perfect. It’s not like I’m some big sinner or anything.”

“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” (James 4:17)

“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” (James 2:10)

“But I’ve tried to obey all of God’s laws.”

“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in His [God’s] sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” (Rom 3:20)

“Okay, okay, I’m a sinner! So now what?”

“...know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.” (Galatians 2:16a)

“Faith in Christ? What did He do?”

“Because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” (Hebrews 10:14)

“Jesus died on the cross for our sins and He rose from the grave to give us eternal life. When we place our trust in Him, God no longer sees us as sinners, but sees Jesus living through us.”

“Trust in Jesus?”

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on Him.” (John 3:36)

“Dear Lord, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to die for my sins. I now know I can’t be good enough in my own strength to stand before You, but it’s only through Jesus Christ that I can come before Your holy presence. I now place my trust in Jesus to be my Savior and Lord. Thank You for granting me eternal life. Amen.”
