How can I have peace when my life is hard?

Jesus Promises Peace

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). But how can we have peace in a time of sorrow or fear? When heartaches and troubles come into our lives we see no way for peace.

A Different Kind of Peace

We think that if our troubles would disappear, then we would have peace. Jesus never promised to end our troubles, but He did promise peace. He promised peace “not as the world giveth.” Heartaches and troubles never end for anyone, no matter where they stand with God. Paul (an Apostle) said of himself, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Paul’s problems never ended, yet he had peace.

How Can We Get God’s Peace?

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing” (Romans 15:13). We can have peace in the middle of troubles when we know that after this life is over we will go to Heaven to be with God. That is why the Bible says there is peace “in believing.” If we have trusted Jesus to forgive our sin, then the troubles of this life do not need to worry us. No matter what may happen to us, we are His. God’s salvation is eternal!

Jesus promises salvation (and peace) to those who believe. “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are not saved because we are good or religious. Jesus “was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification” (Romans 4:25), and He promises to save those who simply believe on Him. The peace of God is for those who have this assurance of eternity.

You can have Jesus’ salvation right now, without the help of anyone else. Tell God that you believe on Jesus alone to save you from your sin. “With the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:10).

He will forgive you, then you can have assurance for eternity and peace for today.  “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
