Take a little time today to go outside…
Go to a place where you can hear the birds singing and see the wind rustling through the trees; a place where you can see the sky stretched out above you. Look around and soak up the sounds, the sights and the beauty. No matter what season of the year you find yourself in, there will be an abundance to observe and enjoy.
Now let’s pause for a moment and think about why this is so. Why is the sky there for us to marvel at, day or night? Why are there birds flying and singing all around us? Why are there trees, rustling in the wind, there for us to enjoy?
In the very first book of the Bible, in the very first verse, it says this:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
In the very same book, at the end of chapter one, it says,
“God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31a).
We enjoy these things every day because the one true God has created them and He constantly sustains all that He has created. In six days, He made all that we see around us and so much more!
On day six, God created man. Genesis 1:27 says this:
“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
God is also our creator. He sustains us, just as He sustains all that He has made. He is the source of our life; the eyes that we see with, the ears that we hear with, and all our senses were made by Him. We use all of these things to enjoy the beauty that we see around us. Apart from God, we would be unable to do any of these things. We simply wouldn’t exist!
Unlike any other part of God’s creation, we were made in God’s image.
We have a unique relationship to Him; we are capable of embodying God’s characteristics. We can reason, we have intellect, a will, and emotions. We were made to have relationship with Him.
In Romans 1:20 it says,
“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”
Each one of us is responsible for our decision to either accept or reject all that God has revealed to us about Himself in His creation. He has given us a clear testimony of His existence and His character. We can see His power, His mind at work, His ability to choose, His wisdom, His goodness … so many things. God has plainly revealed Himself to us, but we have to be willing to see that truth.
Unfortunately, it is very possible and even quite easy, to suppress this truth.
Now, why is it so easy to suppress the truth within ourselves?
Why do we find it so hard to believe in a God who created the world in only 6 days? Why do we fail to see all the clues that God has left for us, like a bread trail leading right to Him?
Well, the answer lies in our very nature. We have a sin problem deep in our hearts. The word of God states in Romans 3:10-12,
“As it is written: ‘There is no righteous person, not even one; There is no one who understands, There is no one who seeks out God; They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, There is not even one.’”
Simply put, we are not righteous in and of ourselves. We do not have understanding. We do not seek God by our own initiative, nor do we accomplish good on our own.
Now, we may not realize that we are doing it, but we often choose to be both blind to the truth and deaf to God’s undeniable presence. We choose not to see what is right in front of our eyes. We choose not to hear the truth that is plainly spoken to us. We choose to believe that which is false.
In Romans 1:18-19, the Apostle Paul says this:
“The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.”
When we choose not to believe what God has made plain to us, we suppress the truth. When we suppress the truth, we deceive ourselves.
So, what is to be done?
Can we turn from lying to ourselves, and instead embrace the truth?
The answer is yes, we certainly can.
Isaiah 55:7 says this,
“Let the wicked abandon his way and the unrighteous person his thoughts. And let him return to the Lord, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
We must make a conscious decision to turn from our sin, whatever it may be, and instead turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. His word promises that He will have mercy on us and will freely forgive our sin.
You see, God is holy. He isn’t like us; we are prone to sin of all kinds, but God is perfect in righteousness. He cannot abide the presence of sin.
Psalm 5:4 says this:
“For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil can dwell with You.”
Our sin stands between us and our creator; It keeps us from having relationship with the One who designed us for that very purpose. We cannot be welcome in His presence if we are covered with the filth of our wrongdoing. We must be cleansed. God knows this; He took it upon Himself to make a way for us to be cleansed and to be reunited with Him … and that way was the cross.
God has clearly shown us the depth of His love for us at the cross.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
God paid the ultimate price on our behalf. He knew that we had no way to pay for our own sins—He knew that we were spiritually destitute, unable to meet our own need, and that is why He came. The Almighty God, maker of heaven and earth, made Himself very small. Born of a virgin, He came into this world to save His beloved creation. He lived a perfect, sinless life, fulfilling all righteousness on our behalf, and He willingly sacrificed Himself on the cross.
In Romans 10:9-10 it says,
“That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”
God knew we would do wrong, deceive ourselves, go our own way … yet He still created us. He knew we would turn to our sin, and in the process, we would wreak havoc on His beautiful world and everything in it; yet still, He created us. This is because He loves us, unreservedly. We are the delight of His heart. We don’t deserve it; we certainly haven’t earned it. Yet His love remains, steadfast, immovable and available to all who will turn to Him.
Make no mistake, He does not love our sin; He loves us.
We are His beloved creation, made uniquely in His image. He longs to forgive us for our sin, to cleanse us of all that stands in the way of a relationship with Him, and to come and live in our hearts, becoming the Lord and Savior of our lives.
He desires to have closeness with us, to be intimately involved in every detail of our lives. He wants to walk with us each day, guiding and leading, protecting and providing, strengthening and upholding us. Simply put, He wants us to turn from our sin, and follow Him.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says,
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
The salvation that God offers is free.
You cannot earn it, just as you cannot earn a gift. It comes at no cost! You don’t have to wait until you’ve cleaned up your act; you don’t have to become worthy of God before you can approach Him. His arms are open right now, and you can choose to run in to His open embrace, brokenness and all. He will forgive. He will cleanse you, and make you wholly clean. Then, you can truly have fellowship and sweet communion with your Creator!
So, the only question left to ask is this:
Are you ready to receive the free gift that Christ is offering you today?
Are you ready to be cleansed of your sin, to place your faith and trust in Jesus, and to welcome His Holy Spirit into your heart?
If you are, then all you need to do is pray.
Confess your sin to God—whatever it might be. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). You are not alone in your shame. We all need forgiveness. Once you have confessed to Him, ask Him to forgive you and to cleanse you of all that you have done. God’s word says that when we ask Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us for our sin and cleanse us of all our unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Now it is time to repent of your sin—to turn from it and place your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. To place your faith in Him means that you are choosing to believe that Christ fully paid the price for your sin by bearing it in His own body on the cross (1 Peter 2:24). He suffered for you, so that you might be healed, and on the third day, He rose from the dead. In doing so, He fully defeated sin and the grave. Sin and death need no longer hold sway in your life!
Once you have placed your trust in Jesus Christ, receiving His forgiveness for your sin, the Holy Spirit will come and dwell within your heart. In this way, God will dwell with you always; He will never leave you nor forsake you.
If you decide to place your faith in Jesus Christ, you will have access to God’s strength, comfort, love, joy and peace at all times.
When hard times come, you will have all you need to face them, because you will have the Lord. He is truly enough; He, in Himself, is wholly sufficient.
If you have chosen to embark on this new journey of faith, I would strongly suggest that you find a local body of believers—a church.
Look for one that teaches God’s word and holds it in the highest regard. Look for a congregation that strives to walk in obedience to God in all things, one that is reaching out with the love of Christ, and welcoming you with warmth and enthusiasm. It may take a little time to find the church home that God has planned for you, but He will certainly provide just the right one. Pray and lift this matter up to Him, and He will lead you.
It is God’s will for each of His children to seek fellowship with other believers. If you have received Christ as your Savior, you have become a child of God (John 1:12-13).
Now, as a child of God, it is time to gather together with others who share your faith and begin to grow in your knowledge and understanding of the Lord. It is time to encourage others with your new faith, as well as to be encouraged by the work of Christ in the lives of others!
It is time to step out and follow Him!
