Throughout my life I have tried to satisfy a void in my heart with many different things: money, success, work, substances, relationships, hobbies, and other mindless activities, but nothing could ever truly fill that hole.

I had relationships that controlled who I was. At some point I developed an anxiety in relationships where I had a constant fear of people leaving me. At times I would feel alone and worthless.

I had good moments, too. There were fun experiences and enjoyment with family and friends.

I had times of laughter, connection, and exploration. I also cared about people, was frustrated by the evil I saw, and even wanted to see change in our world. But when it really came down to it, life was always about me.

Deep down, as most do, I had moral standards. I believed in God’s existence, and I was honestly unsure how anyone couldn’t (someone had to create this huge, life giving, designed world, I thought).

I believed that Jesus was real, too. I experienced church growing up, but at 18 I stopped going. It was boring and I didn’t experience anything in church that changed my life. I thought Christianity was about being good, not sinning, and trying to do better than other people. I thought Christianity was about praying, going to church, reading your Bible, and hopefully meeting this guy Jesus when you die.

I would often violate my own conscience. One night I took around 160 mg of edibles (which is a lot) and I had a panic attack where my heart pounded faster than I had ever experienced. I thought I was going to die. I told God if He let me live I would stop. But the sinful actions: whether drinking with friends, following lustful habits, smoking, vaping, gossiping, lying, living with jealously, and many other offensive traits continued on.

At 20 years old, after getting out of a relationship with someone who became really close to me, I ended up in the worst place of my life. Depression hit me like it never had before. I often had anxiety attacks. All the while, I was stuck in my addictions. This continued for months, until June of 2021 when I had a life changing experience with Jesus! Through Him, I learned that Christianity is not just a church, nor is it just a list of do’s and don’ts. It’s not just a Bible study, either. I met the living Jesus! He showed me how much He loved me, even when I thought I was past His forgiveness. He showed me that hope was available. He showed me who He really is. My life completely changed.

Jesus showed me that my whole life had been ruled by selfishness, and the only reason I was so up and down was because I had made life all about me. I let my value be determined by the world rather than by what God says about me. And I didn’t look at others for their potential, for their destiny in Christ, for their value or for their eternal soul, but rather for how they made me feel. I didn’t live to love others. I had lived life for me. I was the problem.

I began to see that true Christianity is following and knowing the living person of Jesus Christ. True Christianity is walking in power, authority, destiny, and purpose. True Christianity means looking different from the world and seeing lives changed through my life.

True Christianity is intimacy with the Creator of the universe.

Jesus freed me from my depression, anxiety, and years of addiction. Anger, hate, and offense were crushed as I sought Jesus. I began to grow in knowing my value through God’s love and stopped allowing my value to be determined by people. Much of the fear I lived in began to break. A whole new reason for living came alive in my heart. I was alive to experientially know God and to make Him known through my life. I was alive to no longer live for myself, but for God and others. I became freed from sin, from the devil’s grasp, from purposelessness, and from hell itself.

Eternal life found me through Jesus.

If you are at your lowest point like I was, please know that Jesus can rescue you and that He loves you. If you are riding high and life is going your way, please know that you need Jesus, too.

Our highs and our lows in this world can trick us into thinking that our life is only about this life and then—at the end—we could find ourselves eternally separated from God in hell. Hell is a real place of darkness, torment and suffering that those who do not turn to Jesus will go after they die. God truly doesn't want that for you. The Gospel, the good news of Jesus, is the answer for this life and the life that is to come.

Who is Jesus and what did He do?

God so loves us that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to come save us. Jesus came to earth and lived fully as God, yet fully as man.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:5-7).

Jesus became like us in order to redeem us. When Jesus was around thirty years old He got baptized and the Holy Spirit came upon Him. It was not until then that He began His supernatural, world-changing ministry. Why is this important? Because the same Holy Spirit that was with Jesus, that empowered Him to fulfil His mission, is the same Holy Spirit that comes to live inside those who put their faith in Jesus!

Jesus lived the perfect life. He never sinned, never messed up. He enjoyed a perfect relationship with God the Father. He performed miracles. He healed hearts. He went about doing good. He loved people!

Yet, although He did nothing wrong, Jesus was sentenced to death. But Jesus knew what He was doing. He knew no one could truly take His life. He freely gave His life for us, dying on the cross.

“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

But Jesus didn't stay dead! Death couldn't defeat His perfect love and sacrifice. Three days later, He rose from the dead! He is alive today!

What is Sin?

Sin is what separates you from God—it hurts you and it hurts other people. The darkness you see in the world is not a result of God’s doing, but a result of sin.

Sin appears in selfish actions (such as violence, abuse, lying, gossip, greed, anger, hate, addictions, and lust), but sin is more than just the actions. Sin is the brokenness behind the actions. It is the void that is trying to be filled by anything that is not God. Without God, the void remains until the end.

What Jesus did for you!

The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross took on your sin and all your junk to make you clean, new, forgiven, and brought back into relationship with God. God’s grace is available to us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Grace offers to us His supernatural ability to change our lives because of His unmerited love and favor to rescue and save us.

Eternity in hell is the penalty that we would all deserve because of sin, but Jesus took our punishment on Himself. He died and rose from the dead so that we might have a relationship with God and eternal life.

2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “For He [the Father] made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

What do you need to do?

Put your faith and belief in Jesus Christ alone! Recognize your need for a Savior and by faith let Him make you clean, new, and whole. If you mean it in your heart, you can confess your sin to God and accept His forgiveness today!

Believing in Jesus is more than simply an acknowledgment of facts. True belief is a choice to trust in Him and repent. Repentance is a change of mind (belief) that results in change of action (behavior). You turn from sin to new life in Him. This is necessary for salvation in Christ and by doing so, you enter into a relationship with God where you are following His ways, getting to know Him, and letting Him guide you going forward for the rest of your life!

If you feel compelled in your heart, now would be a good time for you to talk to Him. He wants to hear from you!

Additionally, If you make this decision to say “yes” to Jesus, get water baptized as soon as possible. In baptism, you bury all the old junk—the old life—and rise new with Christ!

Romans 6:4 says, “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

We are promised that when we trust in Christ, we become a “new creation” and we receive the Holy Spirit as the one who empowers us to follow Jesus.

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).

“Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit’” (Acts 2:38).

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul’?” (Matthew 16: 24-26).

This is the Good News!

This is the start! Will you begin your new life with Jesus?

I hope you now have made the choice to know Him and choose to continually grow in knowing Him. I hope you decide to follow Him.
