Am I Saved?
Have you ever once said a prayer to Jesus asking to be saved? Did you grow up in church and get baptized, but are now busy with other things? Did you have a Christian parent, but only went to church to make them happy? Have you ever said that you believe in Jesus? Do you regularly attend religious services for social benefits or social justice causes? If you died today where would you spend eternity?
“You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder” (James 2:19).
“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5).
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness’” (Matthew 7:21-23).
“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).
What is the Gospel?
The gospel—or “Good News”—is all about the person of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. It is the means by which God makes payment for sinners, and also declares sinners to be righteous and holy by the blood of Jesus. In short, God Almighty paid for our sins and gave us His righteousness.
The Person and Finished Work of Jesus Christ
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation … for in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:15,19-20).
“That Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
“For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Faith is not accepting a few facts and getting dunked in a pool. “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1), and “the righteous shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17).
Faith is the supernatural work of the living God.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
What is Saving Faith?
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13).
“In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 1:13).
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Being saved is not an emotion or a feeling in your heart. It is the work of the One and Holy God.
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
The Scripture is clear on who does not belong to the Lord
Sinful lifestyle: “If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1 John 1:6).
Claiming we are good people: “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8).
Lives according to our own ways: “Whoever says ‘I know Him’ but does not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him” (1 John 2:4).
Loves material possessions: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).
Denies the Deity of Christ: “No one who denies the Son has the Father” (1 John 2:23).
The Scripture is clear who does belong to the Lord.
Knowledge of personal sinfulness: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Lives according to God’s will: “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments” (1 John 2:3).
Loves brothers in Christ: “Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling” (2 John 2:10).
Righteous lifestyle: “If you know that He is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him” (1 John 2:29).
Indwelt by the Holy Spirit: “By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit” (1 John 4:13).
Jesus calls His sheep and raises the dead
“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” (John 5:25).
“The sheep hear His voice, and He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When He has brought out all His own, He goes before them, and the sheep follow Him, for they know His voice” (John 10:3-4).
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in Him should have eternal life, and I will raise Him up on the last day” (John 6:40).
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die’” (John 11:25-26).
When the Lord saves you, He never loses you
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out” (John 6:37).
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27-28).
“My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and the Father are one” (John 10:29-30).
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel … For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” -Jesus Christ, Son of God (Mark 1:15, Matthew 24:27)
