It is an honor to share a part of my story with you.
I was a typical American kid who celebrated holidays for the trick-or-treating, Santa Claus, or the Easter bunny. Our family did not go to church or talk about God.
My parents divorced when I was in 5th grade (10 years old). After the divorce, my dad became too busy with his new life that he often forgot about me. Because of this, I struggled with rejection. I hung out with the rough crowd when I was a teenager and made a lot of bad decisions. I always felt alone and insecure, and I was searching to be loved, which led me to unhealthy relationships and things that would help fill the void of emptiness. In 1989, a classmate asked me if I believed in God. I remember saying, “If He is real, He will need to show Himself to me.”
In college I occasionally attended a church with my mom. Something sparked in my heart and I found myself searching for what I thought was the right church. I found a great church in 1996 that preached the gospel. I learned I was a sinner that needed forgiveness. One evening in 1997, I was watching Christian tv; a woman was speaking at a high school assembly. Her message was titled, “Sex Has a Price Tag.” At the end of her talk she asked the crowd to pray along with her if they wanted Jesus to forgive them. I wanted to be forgiven so I bowed my head and I started to pray. At that moment I heard Jesus say, “Gina, pray from your heart.” Immediately I prayed with all my heart. Instantly the weight of all my guilt and shame were gone. That moment I felt so free, while love and joy filled my heart. I found what I was searching for: it was Jesus. “And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13).
Are you searching? I found the answer. It is Jesus.
Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6) If you are like me, you have sinned (lied, stolen, lusted, or used God’s name as a curse word, etc…) at some point in your life. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Our sin separates us from God, so Jesus suffered on a cross and laid down His life as a sacrifice for our sin so we could be forgiven and restore our relationship with God. Three days later He arose from the dead to give us eternal life. This is a free gift for all who receive it. Being a good person or doing good works does not save us. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).
Today you can come to God by surrendering your life and heart to Jesus. I’ve included an example of what you could say to God today in prayer. These words are not magical; they need to come from your heart.
“Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. I believe You took the punishment for my sins and rose again to give me eternal life. Please forgive me; I turn from myself to You. I receive Your gift of salvation. I confess You as my Lord and Savior. I want to live my life for You, so come live Your life in me.”
If you prayed this prayer I encourage you to find a church, read the Bible (start in John), and get baptized. Feel free to contact me. I would love to help you.
