“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

Some people think of suicide as a way to escape their problems. But Christ has made a way for us to escape the problems that sometimes drive people to take their own lives.

Suicide can be related to three “hurdles” people cannot get over by themselves: sins, situations, and sorrows. The way out that Jesus provides is the Gospel. The Gospel is God’s remedy for all of man’s problems.

What is the Gospel and how does it apply to each problem?

The Gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let’s look at these three problems and how the Gospel—God’s remedy—applies to each problem.

1. Sin

Some people want to take their own lives because of the shame of some sin they have committed. Remedy: The Gospel—Jesus’ death!

The fact that we are sinners does not take God by surprise. Don’t let your sin be the reason you take your life—let it be the reason you give your life to Him!

Jesus loved us enough to die a sacrificial death because we are all sinners.

Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

If you hate the person you have become as a result of sin, then give that person to the Lord. Jesus can and will forgive you of your sin and make you a new creature in Christ!

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Hebrews 10:17 “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.”

2. Situations

Some want to take their own lives because of their situations. Remedy: The Gospel—Jesus’ burial!

When Jesus was placed in the tomb, it seemed like all hope was gone. It appeared to be the worst possible situation for His followers, but that was not the end of the story! Looking back through the Scriptures we now see how everything that happened was all a part of His purpose and plan.

The worst situation in a person’s life would be dying and going to hell. If He can save us from the worst possible situation, He will be with us in all the others. Let Him get you through whatever situation you may now be facing. God has made a way for us to bear the hard times of life, and His way is not found through suicide, but in the strength that only He can offer. Sometimes you just have to let God take you through this life one day or one hour at a time, and that’s okay. Your worst day still only has 24 hours, and this trial, no matter how hard, is only temporary!

Bring Him your broken heart, the guilt and shame of your sin, and cast your care upon Him for He cares for you. He can put the pieces back together again.

1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

3. Sorrows

Some people want to take their own lives because of sorrows, such as the death of a loved one. Remedy: The Gospel—Jesus’ resurrection!

It’s hard to imagine the sorrow His followers must have felt as they witnessed Jesus being beaten, crucified, dying on the cross, and then being placed in the tomb. Their sorrow soon turned to joy as He arose on the third day. His resurrection gives those who are saved hope and victory over the sorrows of death. One day as born again children of God, our sorrow will to be turned into joy and there will be a resurrection and reunion day.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

Revelation 21:4 “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

So what is a person to do during these seemingly impossible times of their lives?

Don’t take your own life, but give it to God. Call out to Him from your heart and cast your cares upon Him.

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

This does not mean that all your troubles will go away, but you will have someone that will go with you through whatever life might bring your way!

Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
