The beautiful island of Bermuda boasts of 123 churches dotting its 22 square miles. A tour of St. George’s at the east end of the island reveals two unique churches. St. Peter’s Church, established in 1612, is the oldest continuously used Protestant church in the New World. The other is the Unfinished Church, which was designed to be a replacement for the dilapidated St. Peter’s Church. Construction began in 1874. However, due to lack of funding along with some disagreements and a damaging storm, construction ceased. The stone walls stand without a roof, floor or windows overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The Unfinished Church is used as a setting for weddings and other special events.

When Jesus Christ lived on the earth 2,000 years ago, He said that He would build His church (Matthew 16:18). Following His death, resurrection, and ascension back to Heaven, millions of people have become followers or disciples of Christ. The Bible refers to this group of believers by various terms, most notably His body and His church. “He is the head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18).

We meet and worship at our local church buildings, but we are a small part of the larger collective group of believers—His church. Just as when the church began (documented in the Bible in Acts 2), people were and are being saved and added to the church day by day (Acts 2:47).

Later in Acts, we read that the church has been purchased with His own blood (20:28). The purpose of Christ’s death on the cross was to be a substitute in our place, bearing the punishment for our sins. As a result of Adam and Eve’s sin of disobedience in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3), all of their descendants are sinners. God cannot allow sin into Heaven, so Christ died in our place to atone for our sins.

You might ask, “How do I become a member of Christ’s church?” It is not by baptism, good works, giving money, or family heritage. You need to:

Acknowledge that you are a sinner. “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23).

Believe that Jesus died on the cross in your place and that He is the only way to eternal life with God. “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Ask God to forgive your sins based on Christ’s shed blood for you, and trust Jesus to be your savior.

Once you have become a member of Christ’s church, you are like a building stone, a pillar, a door, a window frame, or a light being added to His church. The church is unfinished because Jesus is patiently waiting. He’s allowing time for more members to be added to His unfinished church. He is not willing for any to perish.

One of these days the final person will be added. Christ will gather His church and take us to Heaven. Are you a member of His church? If not, today is the day of salvation.

If you are a member of Christ’s church, what are you doing to help finish the Church? Are you praying for unbelievers? Are you sharing His truth? Are you telling unbelievers of the wondrous work of the Lord Jesus who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life? Time is short.
