This may seem to be a morbid question or one that you or I would rather not talk about. It’s about as exciting as discussing how to handle a living will or paying yearly taxes. However, this moment will be imminent for each and every one of us someday.

Why is this?

The Bible clearly states that each and every person has an eventual appointment with death (Hebrews 9:27-28). The Bible also proclaims that we are all sinners (Romans 3:23). This means that you, I, and everyone else in the world has done wrong against a holy God and we have fallen short of what His standard is and always has been. He and His Word are the ultimate authority in all matters of our lives and apart from Him we will always fall short.

It comes as no surprise that most people already know that they have sinned and come short of God’s glory. However, the saddest part is many people don’t know what they deserve because of their sin. The Bible, which is God’s Word, clearly states, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

A wage is something that you and I earn or deserve. It can be likened to an hourly rate or salary that you or I have coming to us based on our efforts at our places of employment. This is what Romans 6:23 is simply saying.

Unfortunately, the verse indicates that you and I deserve death rather than something good. This isn’t just the end of life as we know it; this refers to spiritual death which includes separation from God and our loved ones that will last forever in Hell. This is a horrible place where suffering never ends.

However, there is still hope we can experience.

In the second half of Romans 6:23, we are told, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” A gift cannot be earned, but only received. Notice here that you and I have hope through Jesus Christ alone and not by attempting to better ourselves by trying harder to keep the ten commandments, religious traditions, or by contributing to charitable organizations. People mistakenly do this every day rather than turning to God. Anything we ever do outside of coming to God on His only terms is prideful and not good enough.

Individuals may even attempt to convince themselves that they can make things right with God based on how much money they have or by the possessions they own. The Bible clearly states, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).

It comes as no accident or coincidence you are reading this tract today.

I admit that this doesn’t sound like very good news when we hear of coming judgment because we’ve fallen short of what God expects; however, the best part of Romans 6:23 is that we are told that the gift of God is through His Son, Jesus Christ, and in no other person or in anything else.

In other words, God the Father gift-wrapped His one and only begotten Son (John 3:16), so that you and I could have everlasting life with Him that could never be based on merit or religious activity. Some may ask or wonder why they can’t accomplish God’s standard or seal of approval on their own.

It is because we are all sinners and we needed someone perfect to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. In Romans 5:8, the Bible tells us that Jesus proved His love for us in that He died for us and for all of our sins. He nailed our sins to the Cross as He shed His Precious Blood to cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.

Here is the best part about God’s message.

Jesus did not stay dead. After three days and three nights He arose to conquer death, hell, and the grave for you and I. The Bible says, “Behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2). Listen to these words seriously. The same God who knows everything about you wants you to invite Him into your heart today, before it’s too late.

Jesus says in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” The Bible clearly states that we must cease from our works. The Bible also says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth [enters] not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth [climbs] up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber” (John 10:1). This means that you and I can only come to God on His terms. The Bible also clearly tells us without the shedding of Christ’s Blood our sin and its penalty has no remission or cure. In God’s Word, Jesus’ half-brother James boldly proclaims, “… and without shedding of blood is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22).

Come to Jesus today as He promises not to cast you out for any reason (John 6:37-38). He loves you too much and His promises He cannot break. He has promised to be your Saviour only when you call upon Him and He will surely finish what He started in your life (Romans 10:13; Hebrews 12:2).

Pray something like this in child-like faith:

“Jesus, I come to you today admitting that I am a sinner in need of your forgiveness. I confess that You are the Son of God and I believe in my heart in your life, death, burial, and resurrection. I’m trusting in You alone to save me and in nothing I could ever do to save myself. In your name I pray dear Jesus, Amen.”
