When God was on His way to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (in Genesis 18), He found Abraham sitting in the door of his tent in the heat of the day. God essentially said, “Shall I not tell Abraham my friend the things that I do?” To put it plainly, God said, “Look, Abraham, I’m on my way somewhere, and I want to share with you a secret that nobody else knows.” 

The first thing that I want you to see in this captivating story is that God called Abraham by name. To hear God call you by name—now that is powerful! Have you ever heard God call you by name? You hear a gentle sound when He softly speaks the syllables of your name; in the process, there is a warm outpouring of love and tenderness that transforms you. Listen carefully for the voice of the Lord, and you will find that He often calls your name. 

To think that God would stop by Abraham’s tent to tell him a secret that nobody else knew. Another profound truth. And just as it happened with Abraham, God wants to share the secrets that are in His heart today. He does not share secrets with just anyone; He shares with those who know Him and are close to His heart. 

Do you believe that Jesus wants to reveal secrets to His people today? Scripture says He wants to share secrets with His closest friends. 

In Psalms 25:14 (ESV) we read, “The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear Him, and He makes known to them [the secrets of] His covenant.

In the French translation, it says, “The intimate communion.” “The intimate communion with the Lord is reserved to those who fear him. With them, he shares the secrets of his covenant.” I love that translation best! Just think about it—during intimate times together, God reveals His secrets! Do you want to hear the secrets that are on God’s heart today? You can if you will but draw near and seek after His heart.

Sometimes He just wants to bare His soul to someone willing to listen, someone who is ready to say, “God, I care about what hurts you. I care about what’s on your heart.” To carry the very burden of the Lord—what an honor and a privilege. What is on the Lord’s heart right now? What secrets does He want to share with His people? I want to be willing to stop and listen to what is on His heart when He has something to say. To think I could sit with Him and hear Him share His very heart ….

We are famous for running to God when something is on our hearts, and there’s nothing wrong with that. We know that God deeply loves us and wants us to share our burdens with Him, for He cares for us. But I want to draw so near to the Lord that I would be willing to listen if He had something to share. I want Him to feel welcome to confide in me whenever He needs a listening ear. Right now, I sense that God is saying, “I’m looking for a friend with whom I can share my heart through intimate communion.” This knowledge of God, this knowing Christ, is available to everyone. None of us is more special or deserving than anyone else. Each of us can get to know Christ in that kind of intimate way, so that: “With them, he shares the secrets of His covenant.” Intercessors often discover the secrets of the Lord.

When we draw near to God in deep intercession, He will begin to reveal things because we can be trusted to pray and carry a burden for others in ways that others simply cannot understand. I remember not too long ago I was driving my car when God gave me a powerful burden for a specific person and began to reveal things to me. As I began to pray, I sensed that this was a precious secret that revealed His love, concern, and compassion for this individual. 

God deeply desires to reveal Himself to His people. Look at Deuteronomy 29:29: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” Oh, in His presence, there are secret things that God desires to share with us. He desires to wake us in the night season to sense the burdens that are on His heart. Some feel that it’s not possible for God to share such things with us, but the truth is that He shares as much as we can handle, depending on how well we know Him and how much He can trust us. 

The secret things that are on His heart are revealed to those who want to know their God—those like John the Beloved. He laid his head on Jesus’ chest and heard His very heartbeat. To listen to the heartbeat of God—imagine that. It’s stunning to realize that we, as mere human beings, can draw near enough to our Creator that He shares the secret mysteries on His heart. God reveals divine knowledge if we’re willing to draw near and wait on Him.

“He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars. He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though He is surrounded by light” (Daniel 2:21b–22, NLT). 

There are deeper truths in the Word of God than we fully realize. We tend to take it for granted that we already get it. But God desires to reveal to us things we do not yet know. For example, maybe we are reading a verse we have scanned a thousand times, and we are in prayer, and we cry out, “God, reveal to me the deep things of the Spirit.” And suddenly, it is quickened and comes alive to us in ways it never has before. That is what it means when it says He reveals to us the deep things.

When God does this, I like to call it the kiss of His presence when He reveals Scripture to us in a brand-new light so that we can share that revelation for the rest of our lives. I can personally take you to different locations where the Lord revealed such things to me, and I am still preaching them today, although they happened twenty-five years ago. That is the kind of God we serve. 

Do we want to know our God? He reveals Himself to us because He wants to be known and appreciated. And if that is the case, it begs the question: why do we settle for a shallow, dead religion? Our relationship with Christ was never meant to be dead and lifeless. He never intended you to have a lukewarm surface relationship with Him; He wants you to come to His throne room and experience Him in a personal way—in all His glory.
