Our tiny redheaded daughter Abigail Rebecca Thompson was born to us on January 17, 1993, and we soon saw that she had some special needs. A birth defect and daily seizures caused Abbie to have severe mental and physical limitations. Although she never spoke, she did finally walk at age six, which thrilled us! Abigail’s “understanding about life” was that of a baby’s mentality. Children’s music, food, car rides, long baths, simple baby toys, and her daddy’s voice calling out “Abigail!” were her favorite things. This was not what we expected or asked for, but God helped us to lovingly care for Abigail. We never knew how long we would have our sweet little girl, and one night when she was twenty-one, Abigail abruptly left us for heaven, leaving a huge void in our lives. God says, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away”  (James 4:14).

During our short time with Abigail, we learned how to give love without expectation, to be strong during difficulties, to have courage while fearful, to have faith when praying, and to trust God’s ways above our own. Did we love our Abbie? Yes! Do we wish her back? No! We KNOW that she is in heaven with God—the absolute best place in the universe! How do we know she is there? We KNOW it based on what God says about the power of the gospel. The gospel—“good news”—is that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and three days later arose from the dead, paying the full price of sin so that people can escape hell. First Corinthians 15:3-4 says, “…Christ died for our sins…he was buried, … he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

Even though she was a sinner by birth, on August 9, 2014, Abigail went immediately to heaven! This was not because she was cute or innocent or had Christian parents but only because of Jesus Christ’s perfect blood, shed when He died on the cross. We sang “Jesus Loves Me This I Know” nearly every day to Abbie, but truthfully, she could NOT understand Jesus’ love or that she had “broken” God’s rules, which earned her eternal death in hell. Since Abigail never understood her own sin or her need to be forgiven, God did not hold her accountable for her sin. Romans 5:13 says that “…sin is not imputed when there is no law.” Abigail’s destiny became heaven when she died in ignorance of her sin. We are told in God’s book the Bible, that Jesus (God) became a man, lived His life without one sin and loved the world enough to pay for every sin committed, including Abigail’s. It is because of God’s mercy shown on the cross that she is right now enjoying His love in heaven!

What God defines as “sin” is written in two places—the Bible and the human heart (your conscience). Today, if you can understand what you are reading, then you can also understand that you have personally sinned against God. Knowing you have done wrong makes you responsible to God for your sin. Because He is holy, God cannot let people enter heaven whose sins are not forgiven. Here is what God wants to do for you: “I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” (Jeremiah 31:34). God’s mercy is available to anyone who admits and turns from their sin while believing that Jesus came to earth, died (paying the penalty of all sin with His blood), and then rose from the dead. God did not make “many ways” to get to heaven. There has always only been ONE WAY—Jesus! Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him [Jesus] to be sin for us [sinners], who [Jesus] knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” Will you accept God’s way?

God wants you to be with Him forever, not separated from Him in hell, so the hard question is “How can you get to heaven?” Here is the simple answer: admit your sin, believe that God has provided the way, and choose Jesus.

God will not force you to accept His free gift of salvation but He IS offering it! Just as Abigail could do nothing to EARN her place in heaven, neither can you. Please, read the following Bible verses and pray (talk to God) about what God said to have your sins forgiven! Today, you can have not only the PEACE of knowing that your sins are forgiven but also the PROMISE of having a relationship with and spending eternity with the God Who created you!

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

“For the wages [payment] of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life [heaven] through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

“…Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel … repent ye, and believe the gospel(Mark 1:14-15).

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (First John 5:13).

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out [remove] my transgressions [sins](Psalm 51:1).
