There are many things that we can work for: cars, houses, vacations, retirement, or wealth. The sky is the limit. If we can dream it, we can work for it. But there is ONE thing that we cannot work for and that is Salvation.

I know this from first-hand experience. I was a faithful church member, a Sunday School teacher, a morally upright person, and I even gave money to the church. I had been baptized, and thought I was a preacher. Deep down when I heard the question, “If you die right now, do you know for sure that you would go to heaven?” I was scared to death. I did not know that heaven would be my home when I died. I was doing all this work for God but I did not know Him. I was working as hard as I could to get to heaven, but all that hard work could never get me there. Isaiah wrote in the Old Testament, “But we are all an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags….” (Isaiah 64:6).

I would sit in church terrified that I would die and go to hell while singing “Amazing Grace.” It was a miserable time until I realized that it was not my job to work my way to heaven. Salvation had been taken care of by Someone else. Jesus Christ had completed all the work. Forgiveness of sin and salvation was not to be earned by me but rather received from Him.

Jesus Christ was born of a virgin (Mary), lived a perfect, sinless life of thirty-three years. During His ministry He was unjustly accused and sentenced to die for crimes that He had not committed. The government of that day (Romans) nailed Him to a cross. On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished” and then “He bowed His head, and gave up the ghost” (John 19:30). He was placed in a tomb but three days later He rose alive from the grave.

I had heard the story of what Jesus Christ had done for the world. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). But on December 14, 1997 I turned from my dead works and my sin, and trusted Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour. No longer did I trust my feeble attempts to get to heaven; I put my faith in the only One who can save—Jesus Christ the Lord. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

It is such a relief to be forgiven of all my sin and to know that one day I will be in heaven because of what Jesus did for me. It is not based on my goodness, my works, or my social or religious status but solely on the completed work of Christ Jesus.

How about you? What if YOU were to die right now? Where would you go? Heaven or hell?

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Repentance is a change of mind that agrees with God that you are a sinner. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). No one, except Jesus, is excluded.

Have you ever lied? Shoplifted? Taken God’s name in vain? Swore? Gotten angry? Lusted? Then you, like me, are a sinner. If you realize that you are a sinner, what will YOU do now? Will you ignore the facts or will you trust Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour? He did all the work to save you. Jesus wants you to acknowledge that you cannot save yourself and that you need Him to forgive you of your sin and to save you. Ask Jesus right now to forgive you of your sin and to save you. Jesus said, “… him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).

Do not put off the most important decision of your life. If you know that you need Jesus please trust Him right now. You are not promised another day or even another breath. “…For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). You will not regret trusting Jesus Christ as your Saviour.
