Are You Right With God?

This sobering question demands an answer because the Bible says “it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). One day God will judge us by His perfect standard. Jesus said “Be ye therefore perfect as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48). My friend, if you are not right with God, wouldn’t you want to know now so that you could find out how to be made right with God before it is too late?

Please take a few moments to read this brief pamphlet and honestly look at yourself in light of God’s Word. The Bible will show you what is wrong, and how to be made perfectly right with God. Truth can be hard to accept, but a lie will never help you.

What is Wrong?

The Bible tells us in Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear.” It is our sin that has broken our relationship with God. Our sin caused God to “hide His face,” or separate Himself from man. Why? Because God is holy. Psalm 99:9b says “the Lord our God is holy.” Since God is holy—totally and completely without sin—sin is a gross and intolerable offence insulting His Character and His Person. He cannot allow sin into heaven.

What is Sin?

1 John 3:4b says, “sin is the transgression of the law.” You sin when you break God’s law. Exodus 20 lists the Ten Commandments of God’s moral law:

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord … in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

5. Honor thy father and thy mother.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

8. Thou shalt not steal.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness [lie].

10. Thou shalt not covet [desire what others have].

Am I a Sinner? Have I Broken God’s law?

Did you ever tell a lie?

Did you ever steal anything, small or large?

Did you ever commit adultery?

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). If you have had lustful thoughts when looking at a member of the opposite gender who is not your spouse—Jesus declares that you are as guilty of adultery as if you had done the act!

Did you ever use God’s name as a cuss word?

Did you ever disobey or dishonor your parents?

If you have broken one of these commandments, you are a sinner. Furthermore, James 2:10 says, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”

So if you keep all His laws except one, you are, in God’s sight, guilty of breaking them all!

The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” If you’ll be honest with yourself, you will see that you, along with all of humanity, have broken God’s law—“For ALL have sinned.” To deny your sinfulness would be calling God a liar—1 John 1:10, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him [God] a liar.”

What Now? — Come to Jesus

Doing good, or trying to keep God’s law, cannot outweigh your sin. The law cannot make you right with God, it can only show your sin. “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh [man] be justified in His sight for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20).

So why did God give the law? Galatians 3:24, “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” God gave the law to show our sin, that men would trust the work Christ did to restore us to God!

What Did Jesus Do?

Sin requires a payment, that good works cannot satisfy; “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a). We all deserve death for our sin against God. This death is not the grave, but an eternal punishment in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8). That is bad news … BUT … the Good News (or gospel) is that Jesus died for you on the cross. 1 Corinthians 15:3b-4 says “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day.”

Why would the sinless Son of God pay the price for your sins and my sins? 1Peter 3:18a says “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.” His death and resurrection frees you from the penalty of sin and gains the forgiveness required to bring you into a right relationship with God.

Do you admit that you are a sinner?

Is the Holy Spirit convicting you of your sins and convincing you of your need for Jesus Christ?

Do you want to be free from the guilt and
penalty of your sins and be right with God?

Then you must, as Jesus says in Mark 1:15, “Repent” and “believe the gospel.”

Repentance is a change of mind. We must see our sin as an offence to God that He will judge, and see Jesus Christ as the only hope to escape eternal punishment. Believing is depending upon what Jesus did for you on the cross when he paid the penalty for your sins.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Call out to Jesus right now, asking Him in faith to save you. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by Me” (John 14:6).

Christ promised, “that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish [eternal punishment] but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
