The Bible is God’s perfect word. It teaches that we can only be right with God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (1 Peter 1:23-25).

The word gospel means “good news.” It refers to the Person of Jesus Christ, and the news of what He did to save sinners from their sin and the just judgment that all so rightly deserve.

1. The Nature of God

The good news begins in the nature of God: God is eternal (has no beginning or ending), self-existent and uncreated. He is holy, which means that He is separate from all created things and that He is absolutely, morally pure. He refuses for sin to dwell in His presence.

2. God Created

God created the universe, including the earth, all creatures, and mankind, in six, literal, 24-hour days. When He was done creating, He pronounced His creation “very good.” He did it all for His own glory and pleasure.

“And God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day” (Genesis 1:31).

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created” (Revelation 4:11).

The original creation was filled with beauty and harmony—there was no sin, sickness, sorrow, or death. Adam and Eve lived in a paradise and had perfect access to God.

3. God Commanded

God gave Adam and Eve one commandment, “The tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that though eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17).

When they were deceived by the serpent (Satan), they ate the fruit and immediately became aware of their nakedness and hid from God. Perfect access to God was then broken and man was doomed to die.

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

Adam and Eve were banished from the garden, and sin and death infected their offspring, as well as the entire human race. We were each born sinners—born under a curse.

“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5).

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good” (Psalm 53:1).

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10-12, 20, 23).

Sin is missing the mark of God’s perfection and breaking God’s holy Law.

4. God Cannot Overlook Sin

Since God made man with an eternal soul, the death that came into the world through sin extends into eternity. A sinful person cannot enter God’s presence—in our sins we each deserve God’s Holy wrath in a place called Hell.

“God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day” (Psalm 7:11).

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).

John 3:36 says that a sinner is right now under the condemnation and wrath of the sovereign God of the universe. Sinners who have never repented and believed the gospel of Jesus Christ are in trouble with God right now!

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14-15).

“Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41).

“And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

For a sinner to have their sins forgiven and obtain eternal life they must be righteous. We have no righteousness of our own though.

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away” (Isaiah 64:6).

There is One who was perfect and righteous—the Lord Jesus Christ! He was the only One! He was the Innocent One! He died on the cross of Calvary and shed His precious blood for sinners—the guilty. Jesus Christ was the only One qualified to be the perfect substitute acceptable to God that could pay for sinners’ offences.

“Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:4-6).

“Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1 Timothy 2:5-6).

“For He hath made Him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18).

Jesus Christ—the Innocent—died for sinners—the guilty. A sinner can only obtain forgiveness of sins and eternal life in Heaven based upon the righteousness of Jesus Christ alone!

Church membership, doing good deeds, partaking of the sacraments, donating to charities, being a good person, or anything else, will never be enough to earn one’s entrance into Heaven or to receive forgiveness of sins. It’s only by the merits of Jesus Christ alone that we obtain forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and are declared righteous before God!

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast … But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:8-9, 13).

5. God Provided a Way

Jesus Christ perfectly fulfills all of the Old Testament requirements. He was born miraculously of a virgin, so He did not inherit the curse of sin.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called His name JESUS” (Matthew 1:18-25).

He was the Son of God. He was fully God and fully man. He lived a perfect, sinless life, so He was not deserving of death: it had no claim on Him. According to God’s plan, in God’s love and mercy, Jesus became the substitute for sinners, carrying our sins in His own body. His death, burial, resurrection and shed blood on the cross of Calvary was the atonement and payment for our sins. Jesus died the death that our sins deserved so that we could be saved from sin, eternal death and Hell.

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Jesus did not stay dead though—on the third day He rose again! He conquered sin, death, Hell and the grave and is alive forevermore! He offers eternal life and forgiveness of sin to all who obey His gospel!

God was under no obligation to provide sinners a way of forgiveness and atonement for their sins—but He chose to offer mercy to all those who obey His gospel.

Jesus said: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

When a sinner is convinced and persuaded of their guilt of sin and confesses it as such to a Holy God—when a sinner repents and believes the gospel of Jesus Christ—then the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ is imputed to that sinner. That sinner is forgiven and saved by the grace of God. Not because of their own righteousness, but because of the righteousness of Jesus Christ alone.

That sinner is declared justified—cleared from guilt and merited punishment—and accepted righteous on account of the merits of Jesus Christ alone and His payment on the cross of Calvary!

God commands the sinner to repent in Acts 17:30 “[God] now commandeth all men every where to repent.”

If a sinner refuses to repent, they’ll perish in Hell: “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3).

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19).

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Repentance is when a sinner changes their mind about their sin and sides with God against themselves. Repentance is also turning from your sinful and wicked ways to the Lord Jesus Christ—turning from everything you to everything God. When they repent, they turn from their sin and wicked ways to the ways of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Everyone is a sinner by birth and a sinner by choice. But God offers terms of peace, forgiveness of sin and eternal life but only on His terms! A sinner MUST surrender and submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:9-13).

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

The time to get right with God is now! Jesus Christ is coming soon, I hope you are ready!

Obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ means to repent and believe His gospel, and to submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

After Jesus saves someone, He changes them for His glory. We are not perfect, but we are not left hopeless in our sins in the same way we were before we met the Lord. Our lives change, God gives us a new heart, and we become a new creature in Christ Jesus. When one is born into God’s family, they become a child of God and with His help strive to follow Him and obey Him.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

It is our prayer that the Holy Spirit of God will convict sinners of their sin and will open blinded eyes, shining the light of the glorious gospel of Christ into dark hearts.

If the Holy Spirit of God is speaking to you today, I strongly encourage you to trust His gospel! Jesus already paid the price. You must obey the commands of His gospel—repentance and faith in Christ alone! We pray that you will become a follower of the Lord Jesus!
