When Jesus was born over 2,000 years ago, He came to be the Savior of the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Even before He was born, an angel spoke to Joseph about Mary, his wife, saying, “…she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Sin is anything we do that God says is wrong – things like lying, envy, selfishness, and stealing.
When Jesus was about 33 years old, He was put to death on the cross. There He carried our sins in His own body (1 Peter 2:24). Three days later, He was raised back to life (Acts 26:23). Jesus told his disciples, “Because I live, you will live also” (John 14:19).
Because He loves us, Jesus came as the God-Man and made the only acceptable payment for our sins – His death. In Him we have forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7). When you believe (trust, rely) on Him apart from anything you do, you can know that you have everlasting life. “He who has the Son has life” (1 John 5:12). It is the gift of God (Romans 6:23). It cannot be earned: “…not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:9).
To know for sure that you will go to heaven, don’t trust in yourself and the good things that you do, but rather “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him” (John 3:36).
Today, why not receive the greatest gift, the gift that God offers – the gift of everlasting life by faith in Jesus Christ by simply taking God at His word.
