A train cannot change tracks on its own. It needs a switch, a mechanical device that allows it to move from one track to another. Without the switch, the train is locked onto its current path. Our lives are the same way. We are all traveling on one of two tracks:
- The track that leads to Heaven
- Or the track that leads to Hell
The truth is, we cannot change or switch tracks by our own effort.
The only ‘switch’ is Jesus Christ. He alone is the way to God. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Only through Him can we leave the track of sin and death (Hell) and move to the track of forgiveness and eternal life (Heaven). Hell is eternal separation from God while Heaven is eternal life with God. The end of life lived your way, by your own reasoning and through your own efforts, is separation from God.
Sin is what keeps us separated from God. The Bible says, “There is none righteous, no, not one … There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside…” (Romans 3:10-12). Sin can be defined as any thought, action, or attitude that is contrary to what God wants. God wants purity and holiness. Sin is like a defect in a railroad track. Even a small break, misalignment, or weakness in the rail can cause a catastrophic derailment. We are all affected by the damage of sin. And just as a train engineer would never send a train down a compromised track, God cannot accept sin at all—not even a little. The Bible says, “ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” and “the wages of sin is death,” (Romans 3:23 & Romans 6:23). It also says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us …” (1 John 1:8).
So, what do we do?
How do we get off the track that leads to Hell? The process is simple. Repent and believe in Jesus. The price for our sin has already been paid by Jesus on the cross!
“For He made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). The Bible says in another place that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, offering us eternal life. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). So, what does repentance look like? It is agreeing with God that you are on the wrong track – having a change of mind and heart that turns you to God and how He meant for you to live. Again, the Bible says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). A simple prayer of repentance to God from the heart, calling upon Jesus to save you and forgive you, is what saves you:
- “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
- “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
- “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved,” (Romans 10:9).
When Jesus rose from the dead, it proved that He is God and that He has fully overcome our sins, just as He said He would—so we can trust Him completely when we repent and believe.
Salvation in Repentance and Faith
It’s a simple yet powerful decision that can change your eternal destination.
“Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Today, I turn from my sin and trust You as my Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me. Amen.”
If this prayer is prayed from your heart – that is, you truly mean it, you truly desire the forgiveness of sin that Jesus offers and truly desire to know Him – then, as the verse says above, He is faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you of ALL unrighteousness. As a result, you have been saved from an eternity in Hell separated from God and, instead, adopted as a child into His family to spend eternity in Heaven with Him!
What happens next?
The switch has been moved, and you are now on the track to eternal paradise with God through Jesus Christ. True believers have now been forgiven and declared righteous and are now children of God (John 1:12-13).
Eternal life is a gift, received through faith in Jesus Christ: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ...” (Romans 5:1).
Stay on Track – Your Eternal Destination Matters
Although you are now justified, declared righteous in Christ, you are being sanctified. As humans, we are still far from perfect. Yes, you will still sin, but now you have Christ as your advocate to the Father. But it does not mean you can derail the train by continuing to sin. Grace is not a license to sin (Romans 6:1-2). True believers persevere and grow in holiness (Philippians 2:12-13; Hebrews 12:14), and when we sin, we confess and are cleansed (1 John 1:9). True believers will want to love, worship, trust, and obey God the Father. Your old self is now dead, and it is time to allow yourself to be transformed by trusting and obeying God.
- “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me...” (Galatians 2:20).
- “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).
- “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind …” (Romans 12:2a).
What happens if I don’t “repent and believe”?
If you refuse to repent from sin and trust Jesus as your Savior, just like every train has a destination, so does every life; a choice to ignore Jesus is a choice to live your eternity in a place called Hell. You can choose eternal life today by putting your faith in Jesus Christ alone.
“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we MUST be saved” (Acts 4:12).
“These [unbelievers] shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:9).
Legacy
Our mother, Sherri, lovingly known as Sherri B., spent her career working for Union Pacific and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad as a brakeman and conductor. She deeply loved the Lord Jesus and faithfully shared the message of salvation and God’s love, as revealed through Jesus Christ, with her family, friends, coworkers, and even strangers she met along the way.
This booklet was written to point people to Jesus, helping them recognize their need for salvation, while also honoring the faith, love, and legacy of our mother, spouse, sister, and friend through Sherri Bee Ministries. It was not the trains she guided, but the Savior she followed and shared with others.
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
