You’ve heard, and maybe used the phrase, “Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die.”
We all understand what it means, but do you know where it comes from? The phrase is a combination of two passages in the Old Testament of the Bible, and is repeated by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament.
1 Corinthians 15:32 says, “If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.’” Think about the first part of that phrase – “If the dead are not raised…” When the party on earth is over – what happens next? Is there life beyond death? The Bible says there is. Further on in that chapter, verse 52 says, “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet … the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable.” Death is not the end!
Maybe you’ve never thought about the next life, or maybe that’s all you think about. The Bible tells us that there are two choices for your life after death – Heaven or Hell. Heaven is for those who have had their sins forgiven in Jesus. Hell is for those who die in their sins. That brings us to some questions. Who is a sinner, and how do you get forgiveness?
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23 ). We are all sinners. We have all fallen short of God’s standard of perfect holiness.
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death,” – this means, because we are sinners, we will die in our sins and be separated from God in Hell. Praise God, He does not want anyone to go to Hell. Did you know that? God wants you to repent of your sins and be saved so that after death you can live in Heaven with Him. The second part of Romans 6:23 says, “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
But how does that work? Well, Jesus lived a perfect life. He met God’s standard of perfect holiness because He was God who became man. He didn’t have to die for His sins. He chose to die for our sins. He took our punishment for sin on the cross and then was raised from the dead. If you believe that He paid the price for your sin and has the power to forgive you and take you to Heaven, all you have to do is accept this free gift!
Romans 10:13 – “For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” You can talk to God right now. Ask Him to forgive your sins, and believe in Him. John 3:16 says – “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
The Bible goes on to say that there will be rejoicing in Heaven when a sinner repents. Do you know the Bible says there is feasting in heaven too? Heaven is a place of celebration; if you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, when the party on earth is over it will be just getting started in Heaven. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
“‘The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart’ (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, ‘Everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame.’” (Romans 10:8-11)
