The Road To Salvation

The Bible teaches us that we have all sinned against the one true God, who is sovereign, holy, and righteous.

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

… For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10-12,23).

“Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).

Sin has extremely serious consequences. Because of our sin, we are all destined to die someday.

“For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23a).

While we’re yet physically alive, we are spiritually dead and are the enemies of God.

“For to be carnally [sinfully] minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal [sinful] mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh [sinful condition] cannot please God” (Romans 8:6-8).

Because God is sovereign, holy, and righteous, He will judge and condemn all who die without being saved.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness” (Romans 1:18).

“But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds” (Romans 2:5,6).

This all sounds like bad news, which it is. But there is good news. The good news is the gospel.

The word “gospel” literally means “good news.” So, here’s the good news.

Because of His great love, God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to give His life as the ultimate sacrifice for sin.

Jesus lived a perfect, sinless life, and He is the only one who could give His life as the substitute for guilty sinners. The Lord Jesus was then raised to life again, proving that He is the Son of God, and that He alone has the power and authority to forgive sin and to grant eternal life to all who believe in Him.

“But God commendeth [demonstrates] his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Romans 5:8-10).

Salvation is a free gift.

It is not something we deserve or earn by doing good works.

“...but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23b).

“Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness” (Romans 4:4,5).

How does a sinner respond to the call of the gospel?

“...if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:9,10,13).

The power of the gospel as revealed in God’s word, and applied by the Holy Spirit, is what leads a sinner to faith, repentance, and salvation. Repentance is a change of mind through which the sinner turns away from his or her sins and turns toward Jesus Christ for forgiveness. Our response to the call of the gospel is the result of the Holy Spirit having changed the disposition of our heart and mind, and giving to us new spiritual life. From start to finish, salvation is entirely a work of God.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth…” (Romans 1:16).

“...despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering [patience]; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” (Romans 2:4)

“But ye are not in the flesh [sinful condition], but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken [make alive] your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” (Romans 8:9-11).

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Those who truly believe the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ can be assured that they are saved, forgiven, have eternal life, and are in a right relationship with God.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:1a,38,39).

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

If you have turned to God in repentance and placed your complete trust in Jesus Christ for your salvation, you should find a local church which will faithfully teach you God’s word and show you how to live the Christian life according to His word. Being involved in a local church will help you to grow and mature alongside other Christians. You should also be baptized. Baptism is a symbol of the Christian’s faith in Jesus Christ and union with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection.

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3,4).

Are you on the road to salvation? Or are you on the road to condemnation?
