Imagine being held captive by a tyrant threatening you with destruction, only for a loving Rescuer to step in and willingly give His life to pay your ransom.

Wouldn’t you feel immense gratitude toward the One who saved you?

This describes the reality for humanity apart from Christ. While believers have been set free, those without Him remain trapped in a broken world and bound by the enemy, facing separation from God. As 2 Timothy 2:26 warns, they need to “come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”

The Devil’s Scheme

We have an active enemy determined to keep us separated from our Heavenly Father. From the beginning, the devil twisted God’s goodness and whispered lies to make humanity doubt God’s heart:

“He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”?’” — Genesis 3:1

“‘You will not certainly die,’ the serpent said… ‘For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God…’” — Genesis 3:4-5

He succeeded in deceiving humanity into turning away from its Creator. Jesus exposed the enemy’s character in John 8:44: “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth … for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Our Choice and Responsibility

Why would God allow this to happen? The answer comes down to love. True love cannot exist without choice; God did not create us to be programmed robots, but gave us the dignity of free will. However, genuine choice carries real responsibility.

God gave a clear boundary in Genesis 2:16-17: “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

Adam and Eve could have trusted God and rejected the devil’s lie. Instead, they chose disobedience. Through that choice, sin entered the world, bringing spiritual death and separation from God: “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). The devil deceived, but the choice to walk away was ours.

The Great Rescue

Because God is perfectly holy, sin creates a boundary that separates us from His life-giving presence: “For the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23).

Yet God’s heart broke over this separation. Out of immense love, He set in motion a master plan to redeem and win us back.

The promised Rescuer who stepped in to save us is Jesus:

The Demonstration of Love:

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

The Good Shepherd & Lamb:

He is “the good shepherd…[who] lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11) and “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

On the cross, Jesus paid our debt and broke the ultimate power of sin and spiritual death forever. While our physical bodies still pass away, putting our trust in Jesus guarantees us eternal life. As Jesus promised in John 11:25: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

The good news is that salvation is a free gift. You don’t have to earn it—you simply receive it by faith. As Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us:

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.”

WILL YOU SAY YES TO JESUS TODAY?

A PRAYER OF FAITH

“Thank you, Jesus, for loving me so much that You were ready to die for me. Forgive me for my sin. I want to have a relationship with You. Please come into my life. I acknowledge You as my Lord and Savior. Amen.”
