Imagine for a second looking over your whole entire life and having the ability to seize regrettable moments from your past and fix them.
Obviously, you and I can’t do that. We would need a time machine to accomplish this impossible feat. Just think of all the harmful words you and I have said that we wish we could take back or the foolish things that you and I have done that can’t be erased. Unfortunately, we can’t go back through our lives and fix these irreversible issues. We all have done at least one thing we regret, haven’t we? It could have been an unkind word spoken, a disrespectful behavior pattern with our parents, or we have chosen an irresponsible lifestyle. We're all guilty in some way or another.
Why is this?
The Bible, which is God’s Holy Word (without error), tells us that we are all sinners. It is recorded in God’s Word, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Many of us know this to be a fact already, and we accept it as true. You and I are taught as children the difference from right and wrong. We even know most of the time when we are doing right or wrong. This doesn’t sound too bad most of the time because we know that all of humanity is in the same boat.
However, there’s more to it than that. We have not met God’s standards of holiness and what He expects. Why is this a problem?
God tells us in His Word that sin has a terrible price tag attached to it that affects people; this happens to apply to you and I as well. This price tag or ramification is death.
It comes as no surprise to individuals that death is imminent. Nobody living on the planet today gets out of paying for their sin. It’s referred to as a sin debt. In the New Testament of God’s Word we are warned, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Notice in this verse the word “wages”. It is likened to something that is earned. You and I can relate to it very much. When we work at our jobs, we earn a wage or a salary because of our efforts. This verse clearly tells us that what we deserve because of our sin is death. This isn’t just an earthly death as we know it to be. It is an eternal death where you and I will be separated from God and our loved ones forever in hell if we don’t know Him. This is the worst thing without a doubt that you or I could ever face. The good news for you is that you have the opportunity even at this moment to open up your heart to God. The second half of this verse (Romans 6:23) tells you and I that eternal life is through Jesus Christ the Lord. It cannot be earned because it is a gift.
God the Father loved you and I so much that he sent His only Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that you and I could have everlasting life (John 3:16). This is how He proved His love to you and I and to all of humanity. He loves you so much that He wants you to seize this opportunity and come to know His Son Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. Some people don’t accept this simple message because they don’t believe they are sinners. Others reject it because they believe that there are many ways to come to God or that there are many religions that they can follow to get to Heaven.
That’s the problem. Men are capable of making regrettable mistakes that can’t be undone. They trust and follow their own ways or ideas of being accepted by God and fall short in the process.
The Bible, which is Holy and infallible clearly states“…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Historians and scientists can attempt to debate this statement all they want, but these were the all-powerful words of Jesus. Only He had power to defeat death, Hell, and the grave to give you and I the victory over our sin debt. No other religious leader has been witnessed to conquer death for you. Maybe you’re wondering what you can do now if you've been following the wrong path to reach God and what He expects. The answer is to stop trusting in attempting to make yourself good enough in His sight. Simply trust in Him today to save you from your sin debt. The Bible says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). These are the greatest words ever spoken because of how they will change your life. “Whosoever” includes anybody, including yourself, and “shall be saved” means without a doubt and not possibly or maybe.
I would encourage you to come to God on His terms today and not your own. Seize the moment as you are never promised a tomorrow. Don’t make the decision of being prideful and trying to earn good standing in His sight by keeping the Ten Commandments in your own strength, trusting in your riches, or by relying on anything you have done for the community (like giving to charitable organizations). Don’t decide to continue to follow some false leader for your salvation either. Jesus is the only way unto salvation. God’s Word clearly tells us “…He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber” (John 10:1). Jesus promises to cleanse you of all your sin if you simply ask Him. Maybe you’re asking why Jesus’ choice to die for you personally was necessary. In Hebrews 9:22, we are told, “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” This remission is everlasting healing made possible only by the precious Blood of Jesus Christ.
The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9).
If you would like to be saved today, call upon Jesus to save you as only He can and will. He promises, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).
I would encourage you once again to seize the moment right now and come to the only person who can fix your past and all of its mistakes and sinful decisions.
Calling upon Jesus is simple child-like faith, trusting Him to fully forgive you and do something for you that you could never do for yourself.
Pray a prayer similar to this:
“God, I come to you today admitting that I am a sinner in need of your forgiveness. I acknowledge that I deserve to go to Hell for how I have sinned against you. I thank you for sending your only Son Jesus to die for me to pay my sin debt. I choose to believe in His life, death, burial, and resurrection. I ask now that you would forgive me of my sins as I am trusting in you and you alone dear Jesus. I thank you for cleansing me in your perfect Blood. In your mighty name I pray dear Jesus, Amen.”
