Before Christ:

Before I was saved, most people thought I was a pretty good person. In fact, when I told one of my relatives that I had gotten saved, they said: “Saved? Saved from what? You never did anything!” But those people didn’t know my heart.

Most of them didn’t know the language I used at work, or the books I used to look at, or the problems I had with my temper. But even with all of that, I still thought I was as good as the next guy. I still thought my good works outweighed my bad.

A Man Named Bobby:

In 1967, while working at General Motors, I met a man named Bobby. I realized there was something different about him. He usually seemed to have a smile on his face, had a nice sense of humor, and he seemed to get along with just about everybody.

I didn’t know what it was, but there was something different about him. I didn’t know it at the time, but that difference was Jesus Christ. It wasn’t long before he and I became friends. He invited my wife and I over to his house to meet his wife and have dinner with them. He had only been saved a few months himself, and he began to share with me things he was learning at church.

At Conversion:

My wife and I soon started going to their church. We both had resisted the gospel many times. But on August 2, 1968, while lying on my back in bed at about one o’clock in the morning, I had these words come into my mind, “You don’t have any assurance that you will wake up in the morning.”

At that moment in my life, I knew I was a sinner in need of a Savior. If I had died that night, I knew exactly where I was going, and it wasn’t heaven. I said, “Oh God, I don’t want to go to sleep tonight without knowing for sure that I’m saved.”

And God answered my prayer.

Why not pray something like this? “Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe that on the cross You bled and died for me, and then rose again from the dead. Please forgive my sin and come into my life and be my Savior. Thank You for saving me. Help me now to live for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Romans 10:9
