WHEN WAS JESUS HOMELESS ... AND WHY?

The Lord Jesus was born in a stable while His mother and foster father were away from home (Luke 2:4-7). As a young child He was a refugee in Egypt, fleeing Herod’s efforts to murder Him (Matthew 2:13-15). Later the family settled in Nazareth (Matthew 2:19-23) and He spent His boyhood and young manhood in a modest home. However, at about the age of 30, He left that home to travel about Galilee and Judea for three years, teaching, preaching, and healing. He said of Himself during that time, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay His head” (Matthew 8:20). He owned only His clothes. At the end of the three years He was arrested, falsely accused, and crucified.

The Lord Jesus was not always poor and homeless. Before He came to this earth He had glory (John 17:5) and was rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Why, then, did He leave that glory to come to this earth and endure homelessness, mistreatment, and an agonizing death? He came for our sake. “Ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich”
(2 Corinthians 8:9). At just the right time God sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to this world to redeem us and make us His children (Galatians 4:4,5). The Lord Jesus came to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15) and to die for the ungodly (Romans 5:6).

Are you a sinner? Are you ungodly? The Bible says that “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23). This includes the rich, the poor, those living in mansions, and those who are homeless. Every one of us has done, said, or thought things that displease God. Thinking impure thoughts, telling lies, not doing good to someone who needs it are all sins according to God. God is holy and must punish sin. But if we admit our sins and put our trust and hope for salvation in Christ alone, who died for sinners, the Lord Jesus will save us, take our sins away, and provide a heavenly home for us when we leave this earth. “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31). “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).

The Lord Jesus is no longer homeless. Three days after He was crucified, He rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:3,4) and 40 days after that He returned to His glorious home with His Father (Acts 1:1-9). He is there now preparing homes for all those who have trusted Him as Saviour and Lord (John 14:2,3). You may never be rich or have a fine home on this earth, but if you trust in Christ, you can spend eternity with Him in a home beautiful beyond your greatest dreams. If you reject Christ, you will have to face Him as Judge and spend eternity without Him in the lake of fire. Why not trust Christ today? —M.K.C.
