I’ve got to be free!

Deep in the heart of every person is a desire to be free... free to go anywhere you want.

“No, this bus doesn’t stop at the planet Zeenon today.”

….Free to work anywhere you want.

“Okay, um… I’ll take this job.”

...Free to live anywhere you want.

“Yeah...I’ve always wanted to live here.”

...Free to pursue your dreams.

“I’m going to marry that girl some day."

“Yeah, right!”

We live in the freest country in the world….

...Yet how many people are truly free?

“Work harder! I’ve got to work harder!"

The reason so many of us still feel trapped is that we define freedom as doing what we want to do.

“No girl is going to tie me down. No sireee! I...uh...like my freedom.”

“Hey, it’s a free country. I can do what I want.”

What we don’t understand is that such freedom really leads to slavery.

“Hey, I’m not a slave! I can…”

“Work less”

“Get married”

“Quit drinking”

“...Any time I want!”

True freedom is the ability to do what we know we should do.

“Should do? I don’t do that!”

“Me neither!”

“Yeah!”

In fact, many people who think they are “free,” if they were honest, would admit that they are really slaves. Jesus said,

“Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” (John 8:34)

“Yikes!”

“Double yikes!’

“Yeah!”

But Jesus also said,

“If the Son [Jesus] sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

“But how can Jesus…”

“...Set us free?”

“Yeah!”

Jesus Christ voluntarily died to take the punishment for the sin that enslaves you....sin that keeps you from knowing God and His forgiveness.

“Died?”

“For me?”

“Yeah?”

“For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the spirit.” (1 Peter 3:18)

After three days in the grave, Jesus Christ came back to life to prove His power to free us from sin.

“He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.” (Romans 4:25)

“He rose?”

“From the grave?”

“Yeah?”

“Now the good news is that Christ loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood.” (Revelation 1:5)

“Jesus loves us?”

“Jesus freed us?”

“Jesus...yeah?”

We can be assured of freedom from the penalty of our sin when we stop trusting in our own good deeds to save us and begin trusting in Christ as the complete payment for our sins.

“Righteousness from God come through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (Romans 3:22-24)

And when we trust Christ, He promised to send His spirit to live in us and give us the freedom to do what we should do. That is real freedom!

“Oooo!”

“Wow!”

“Yeah!”

“Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

“Dear Lord Jesus, I now trust that your sacrifice paid for my sins. I receive your forgiveness and your gift of eternal life.”

“Thank you for dying for me and for setting me free!”

“Yeah!”
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5:1)
