1. Only God can calm a raging sea.
JEHOVAH: “O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you? You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them” (Psalm 89:8-9).
JESUS: “And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?’” (Mark 4:39-41).
2. Only God could create the universe.
JEHOVAH: “I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host” (Isaiah 45:12).
JESUS: “Of the Son he says…‘You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands” (Hebrews 1:8-10).
3. Only God deserves worldwide worship.
JEHOVAH: “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance’” (Isaiah 45:22-23).
JESUS: “At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11).
4. Only God can be King of kings and Lord of lords.
JEHOVAH: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9).
“And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one” (Zechariah 14:9).
“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords” (Deuteronomy 10:17).
JESUS: “So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!’ And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, ‘Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!’ His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him” (John 12:13-16).
“They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings” (Revelation 17:14; 19:16).
5. Only God can be honored “just as” God is honored.
JEHOVAH: “I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other” (Isaiah 42:8; 48:11).
JESUS: “For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him” (John 5:21-23).
Who Jesus is makes all the difference in the world. Will you today place your trust in “our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13)?
