“O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!”
America is truly a beautiful place
In the summer of 1893, when Katharine Lee Bates was lecturing at Colorado College, she went to the top of Pike’s Peak. Inspired by the beauty of the view, she wrote all four verses of “America the Beautiful.” The popular poem was set to music in 1910 and has since become one of the most beloved patriotic songs of all time.
From the busy streets of New York to the rugged California coast, America is filled with man-made wonders and the natural beauty of God’s creation. There are so many places to experience and explore!
But what if I told you that there’s a place more beautiful than anything you could imagine, and you could be there for eternity? Would you be interested in knowing how to get there? The place I would like to tell you about is called Heaven.
What is Heaven like?
In the Bible, Heaven is described as a place of ultimate peace and joy in the presence of God. It is where those who know God will dwell forever after this life is over. Heaven is the place of God’s throne. In Psalm 103:19, we read that “the Lord hath prepared His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all.” In Heaven, “God shall wipe away all tears … there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain” (Revelation 21:4). Sounds wonderful, right?
Who gets into Heaven?
It’s important to know that not everyone will be in Heaven. God is holy, and Heaven is holy, but we are not. We are all sinners, and no matter how hard we try to do what’s right, we are still stained by sin. To be made ready for Heaven, we need to be washed and made new. God has made the way for this!
Jesus, the Son of God, left Heaven to enter our world. He lived a sinless life and then willingly laid down His life, enduring God’s wrath, to pay for our sins. God’s plan for our salvation was revealed when He “made Him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Jesus took the punishment that we deserved and then rose again from the grave, so that we can be forgiven and made holy.
How can you make Heaven your home?
You can’t earn your way into Heaven or buy a ticket to get there. There is only one way to enter and that is through Jesus, who said “I am the door” and “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 10:9; 14:6).
Salvation is a free gift because Jesus already paid the price. “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). God now calls us to turn to Him in repentance and put our trust in Jesus. “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).
Do you know Jesus as your Savior? If so, you can know with certainty that you will spend eternity in Heaven, a place filled with God’s presence and beauty beyond anything we can imagine. “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard … the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
