Where Are You Headed?

You might be pretty sure where you will be later today or tomorrow, but can you say for sure where you will be next week or next year? The uncertainties of life make it hard to know where we are headed; the farther away something is, the more unpredictable it becomes. Maybe this is why so many people are unsure of where they are headed for eternity—it can seem so far away. But is eternity really a mysterious unknown?

Can We Know?

Can we know that we are on the right road, the one that will bring us safe and secure to Heaven? Yes, this precious information is given to us in God’s “road map,” the Bible. It says that we can know, positively, where we are going to be throughout all eternity. According to the Bible, there are people who, right now, are saved  from the wrath of God: “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18). These people know that they have eternal life: “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13).

How Many Ways Are There?

Religious people have many  conflicting theories about how to please God. But their ways of salvation are powerless and futile because they are based, in one way or another, upon human effort or human merit. Some would have you try to reform and live better, some would tell you to keep the Ten Commandments or the Golden Rule. Some would have you go through certain church rituals: baptism, confirmation, and so on. But in the Bible we learn that we are corrupt and fallen creatures whose religious efforts are useless in God’s sight. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “We are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6).

God has only one way of salvation for sinners. His way is not based upon any human reform or effort, but upon the finished work of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Because He was without sin or guilt, Jesus was the only one qualified to stand in man’s place before God, paying for man’s sin with His own blood. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

How Do I Get There?

God’s map is clear. His directions are simple. The hardest part is for us to admit that we are on the wrong road, and headed in the wrong direction. It’s hard for us to face up to the cold reality that we don’t measure up in God’s sight. Basically, it’s hard for us to repent, to acknowledge before God that we are wrong and He is right—that we are sinful and He is holy. “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19).

God loves you. He has given His only Son to die for your sins. He is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). If you will come to Him as a guilty and undeserving sinner, He will give you eternal life as a free gift, bought and paid for on the cross of Calvary. “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Knowing For Sure

When you turn to God, putting your faith in Jesus Christ who died for you and rose again, salvation will be your eternal possession (John 10:27-30). Listen to the words of Jesus: “The one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” (John 6:37). “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24).

Where are you headed? If you’re not on God’s way, you’re on the wrong way! Right now is the time to turn around, call out to God, and put your trust in Jesus.

Puede que estés muy seguro de dónde vas a estar más tarde, el día de hoy o mañana, pero ¿puedes decir con certeza dónde estarás la próxima semana, o el próximo año? Las incertidumbres de la vida hacen que sea difícil saber hacia dónde nos dirigimos; cuanto más lejana es una cosa, más impredecible es. Tal vez, es por eso que muchas personas no están seguras hacia dónde se dirigen en cuanto a la eternidad; puede parecer algo muy lejano. Pero ¿es la eternidad un misterio desconocido?

¿PODEMOS SABER?

¿Podemos saber que vamos por el buen camino, el que nos llevará seguros al cielo? Sí, esta invaluable información la podemos encontrar en el “mapa de caminos”: la Biblia. Ella dice que podemos saber, con seguridad, dónde vamos a estar por toda la eternidad. Según la Biblia, hay personas que, ahora mismo, son salvas de la ira de Dios: “Porque la palabra de la cruz es necedad para los que se pierden, pero para nosotros los salvos es poder de Dios” (1 Corintios 1:18). Estas personas saben que tienen vida eterna: “Estas cosas os he escrito a vosotros que creéis en el nombre del Hijo de Dios, para que sepáis que tenéis vida eterna” (1 Juan 5:13).

¿CUÁNTOS CAMINOS HAY?

Las personas religiosas tienen muchas teorías contradictorias acerca de cómo agradar a Dios. Pero sus caminos hacia la salvación son impotentes e inútiles porque se basan, de una forma u otra, en el esfuerzo, o el mérito humano. Algunos te dirán que trates de reformar tu vida y que vivas mejor. Otros te dirán que guardes los Diez Mandamientos, o la Regla de Oro. Algunos te pedirán que cumplas con ciertos rituales de la iglesia: bautismo, confirmación, etc. Pero, en la Biblia aprendemos que somos criaturas corruptas y caídas cuyos esfuerzos religiosos son inútiles a los ojos de Dios: “Todos pecaron y no alcanzan la gloria de Dios” (Romanos 3:23). “Todos nosotros somos como el inmundo, y como trapo de inmundicia todas nuestras obras justas” (Isaías 64:6).

Dios sólo tiene un camino de salvación para los pecadores. Su camino no se basa en ninguna reforma o esfuerzo humano, sino en la obra consumada de Su Hijo amado: Jesucristo. Puesto que Él no tenía ni culpa ni pecado, Jesús era el único calificado para ocupar el lugar del hombre delante de Dios, pagando por los pecados del hombre con Su propia sangre. “La sangre de Jesús su Hijo nos limpia de todo pecado” (1 Juan 1:7). Jesús dijo: “Yo soy el camino, y la verdad, y la vida; nadie viene al Padre sino por mí” (Juan 14:6).

¿CÓMO LLEGO ALLÍ?

El mapa de Dios es claro. Sus instrucciones son simples. La parte más difícil es admitir que vamos por el camino equivocado, y que vamos en la dirección incorrecta. Es difícil para nosotros enfrentar la dura realidad de que quedamos cortos delante de Dios. Básicamente, nos es difícil arrepentirnos, para reconocer delante de Dios que nosotros estamos equivocados y que Él está en lo correcto, que somos pecadores y Él es santo. “Por tanto, arrepentíos y convertíos, para que vuestros pecados sean borrados” (Hechos 3:19).

Dios te ama. Él ha dado a Su Hijo unigénito para que muera por tus pecados. Él no quiere “que nadie perezca, sino que todos vengan al arrepentimiento” (2 Pedro 3:9). Si vienes a Él como un pecador culpable que no merece nada, Él te dará gratuitamente la vida eterna, como un regalo, el cual fue comprado y pagado en la cruz del Calvario. “La dádiva de Dios es vida eterna en Cristo Jesús Señor nuestro” (Romanos 6:23).

SABIENDO CON CERTEZA

Cuando acudas a Dios, poniendo tu fe en Jesucristo quien murió por ti y resucitó, la salvación será tu posesión eterna (Juan 10:27-30). Escucha las palabras de Jesús: “Al que viene a mí, de ningún modo lo echaré fuera” (Juan 6:37). “El que oye mi palabra y cree al que me envió, tiene vida eterna y no viene a condenación, sino que ha pasado de muerte a vida” (Juan 5:24).

¿A dónde te diriges? Si no estás en el camino de Dios, ¡estás en el camino equivocado! Ahora mismo es el momento de dar la vuelta, clamar a Dios, y poner tu confianza en Jesús.
