Can a person know where he is going? Can he be sure that he is on the right road? There are many wrong turns we can take. Is your life on the road to blessings and happiness?

What about the next life – what road will you be on when this life is over? Can you know without a doubt whether you are going to heaven or not?

Yes you can know! This precious information is furnished in God’s road map, the Bible. While we may not know what lies immediately ahead of us in this life, we may know, positively, where we are going for the next life. The Bible tells us we can know, because the decision happens in this life: “you may know that you have eternal life—you that believe in the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).

The Bible says that there are people who will have eternal life and people who will not. What is the difference between the two? “Those who believe in [Jesus] are not judged; but those who do not believe have already been judged, because they have not believed in God’s only Son” (John 3:18).

People have many theories for gaining life after death. They will point you in more directions than a compass. But their roads to life after death are all futile, because they depend on human effort or trying to do good. Some want you to reform and live better; some would tell you to keep the Ten Commandments or the Golden Rule; some ask you go through special rituals and ceremonies.

But in the Bible we learn that everyone has done something wrong, that means everyone has sinned and needs to be saved. No one is perfectly good and acceptable to God, no matter how hard they try. So people are incapable of earning God’s blessing, “everyone has sinned and is far away from God’s saving presence” (Romans 3:23).

God has only one way to save sinners. His way is not based on any human reform or effort, but on what God himself already did through his beloved Son, Jesus. Jesus is the only person who ever lived a perfect life. He never sinned. He was never guilty of doing anything wrong. That means Jesus alone is qualified to deal with our sins. “Christ appeared in order to take away sins … there is no sin in him” (1 John 3:5).

Jesus dealt with sins when he died to pay God’s just penalty. Since Jesus’ death paid the penalty, “God forgave us all our sins” (Colossians 2:13). “If we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and … he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing” (1 John 1:9).

Because Jesus died for all our sins, the Bible teaches us that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). He is the only way for a person to have their sins taken away. So Jesus is the only road that can take a person into God’s presence.

Human theories tell you to try harder, to be better, to fix yourself. But God tells us we can be set free from the guilt of our sins by trusting in Jesus, who died to pay for sins. That makes Jesus the only Savior for the whole human race. If you have God’s Savior Jesus, you have eternal life.

It is possible to know where you are going. “Whoever has the Son has [eternal] life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12).

God does not want anyone to be lost. If you admit to God that you are guilty of doing wrong, he is willing to give your sins to Jesus and give you eternal life as a gift from Jesus. “God’s free gift is eternal life … with Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:23).

So you can know you are on the right road. You can say with the Bible, “I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live” (Psalm 23:6).
