3 Simple Habits for Growing in Your Faith

Living a fruitful Christian life in a broken and hurting world can often seem like an overwhelming task. The Lord wants every Christian to display the Holy Spirit’s fruit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (see Galatians 5:22-23). How can this be accomplished?

The key is to develop these three spiritual habits which will draw you closer to God and deepen your understanding of His will for your life.

New habits may be difficult at first but are the means to help you grow in your faith. The three habits described below are time-tested ways to develop a relationship with God that bears fruit. Those who have sought the God of the Bible for thousands of years have followed these simple habits to walk with God and be fruitful for Him. Put these into practice for 3 months and you’ll be amazed at the result!

Read the Bible every day

Start with the New Testament and read the story of God’s deliverance of humanity through Jesus Christ.

As you begin each day’s reading, ask God to help you understand what you read. When you’ve finished your reading, ask yourself “what does this tell me about God, and about myself, and my relationship to Him?”

Speak to God every day

The Bible calls it prayer. Use this time to thank God for His goodness and salvation. Ask Him for help to grow spiritually and know His will, so you can carry it out (Colossians 1:9-12).

Memorize Scripture

Start out with these short verses. You can memorize one each week. Keep reviewing previous Scriptures to settle in your heart. Hiding the Word of God in your heart can keep you from sin (Psalm 119:11). We live in a culture where truth becomes relative to what you want. But by knowing God’s Word, you will be able to conform your morality to a true understanding of the Bible.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

“Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face continually.” Psalm 105:4

“No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

“Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you also are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24

“For if you forgive other people for their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” Matthew 6:14

“Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly.” John 10:10

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5:4

“But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.” 1 Timothy 6:6

The New Testament is less than an inch thick! Yet for two thousand years it has transformed millions of lives all over the world. Let it transform yours!
