Are You Looking for Something?

“Where is it?”

“I’ll never find it!”

“It’s got to be around here someplace.”

“What are you looking for?”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“That must be why it’s so hard to find.”

“You’re telling me!”

I first realized I was looking for something when I was a little kid.

I did things to gain my parents’ attention.

“Very nice, dear. Now eat your peas.”

As I got older I thought gaining acceptance from my friends was what I was looking for.

“Hey, man, I didn’t know you smoked.”

“Sure -cough-cough- I do!”

Later I began a futile quest for the perfect woman.

“Nope! Too many zits!”

I was told that education was the answer for all of life’s problems. I believed it until I began noticing my educated professors.

“Have you seen my glasses?”

I then thought a high powered career was what I was looking for.

Then I thought a warm, loving family was what I was after.

Of course I was also convinced that all I was looking for was just a little more money, until I heard a rich tycoon say…

“All I want is just a little more money.”

A success seminar taught me that progress toward my goals was more important than attaining them.

I was convinced, ...for a while.

“Yessiree! Today is a new day!”

“....Another day older and closer to death.”

“Then you might identify with one of the world’s wisest, richest, and most successful people who said…”

“When I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 2:11)

“Yes! That’s how I feel! Who said that?”

“King Solomon in the Bible.”

“The Bible? You mean even it doesn’t give me any hope of finding what I’m looking for?”

“Sure it does! Solomon also said…”

“Without Him [God] who can… find enjoyment? To the man who pleases Him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness.” (Ecclesiastes 2:25-26)

“I don’t feel very pleasing to God.”

“That’s the problem- nobody is, Solomon also said…”

“There is not a righteous man on Earth who does what is right and never sins.” (Ecclesiastes 7:20)

“Because of our sinful, selfish nature, we are separated from our holy, sinless God, and we look for fulfillment everywhere but in God who alone can supply it.”

“We all, like sheep have gone astray, Each us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him [Jesus] the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)

“But Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, came to Earth and suffered the just punishment for our sins- death!”

“Now He lives to offer us forgiveness and to show us the way back to God.”

“He died in our place and then rose again from the dead.”

“God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son [Jesus], that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“That’s what I’ve been looking for! What do I do?”

“Stop trusting yourself and your own good deeds to get you to Heaven. Instead, trust in Jesus alone as the one who paid the penalty for your sin. Then you’ll be forgiven and your eternal life with God will begin right now.”

“Dear Lord Jesus, I realize that I have been looking for You in all the wrong places. I place all my trust in You now as my Savior. Come into my life and help me live to please you. Amen.”

“Now what are you looking for?”
