Your Physical Sorrow

Our hearts grieve with you over your recent loss. It is natural to mourn and grieve over this physical separation from your loved one. God has allowed this event to occur, but He has not left you alone; and you can be assured that His ways are always righteous and just. God understands your pain; in fact, at the death of a close friend, “Jesus [God the Son] wept” (John 11:35).

The Bible reminds us that God is “… the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

God’s Sorrow

Do you know that God also experiences grief over separation? Death was not part of God’s original plan. God created Adam and Eve in perfection. When they rebelled and chose their way over God’s way, sin and death began. Romans 5:12 states, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” We are all sinners by nature and by choice. Our sin brings physical death as well as spiritual death (separation from God). “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2).

God had to punish sin, but He also lovingly provided the sacrifice for that sin. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Because we could not solve our sin problem, Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, came to earth to take the punishment for our sin. He lived a perfect life and died for you. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” 1 Peter 3:18 states, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 explains, “…how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day….” Christ died and rose again for YOU!

Have You Experienced Spiritual Sorrow?

As the death of a loved one causes great grief, our separation from God caused by sin should grieve us as well. The apostle Paul taught, “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death”
(2 Corinthians 7:10). Salvation and lasting comfort are available to you if you are willing to humbly acknowledge your sinful condition before God (repent) and, in your heart, turn from sin to Christ. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Jesus Christ will save you if you ask Him in faith.

Eternal life is a gift, not something that you can purchase or earn. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus preached, “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). This comfort is available to those who mourn over the sin that separates them from God. Will you, like David say, “For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin” (Psalm 38:18)?

“Now our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
