You mean… Looks aren’t everything?
Have you ever picked up a book because of its cover…
“Best seller! Excitement! Action! Adventure!”
...Only to discover what was inside was completely different than what you thought it was?
You know the old saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover” is true with regard to people too.
Obviously some people want you to make certain judgements about them based on how they look.
“Boo!”
“Eeeeek!”
...But deep down they may be entirely different than what you think.
But others, no matter how hard they try, can’t seem to shake how others think of them based on their looks.
“I’m really a straight “A” student.”
“I’m really witty and charming.”
“I’m really a lousy athlete.”
There are some who do their best to make themselves invisible, but then complain that nobody notices them.
“Sigh! Nobody cares about me.”
Then there are are those who dress to get a reaction, but are offended when they get one.
“What kind of girl do you think I am?”
Some people are convinced they are something they are not.
“Hey! Put me in, coach, I can play!”
...while others are convinced they are not something they really are.
“You’re not pretty! You’re ugly! Ugly! Ugly!
Some people are so afraid to let you know who they really are, they try to look like someone else.
...while others try to look like everyone else.
“Hey, guys, I’m just like you!”
But no matter how hard we try, we can’t hide who we really are.
Our true character will usually reveal itself under the facade.
“Nerd!”
We are often just fooling ourselves.
“You mean nobody thinks I’m cool because I look like this?”
Most people would agree there is too much emphasis on how we look rather than who we are.
In fact, In the Bible, God says…
“The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:78)
No matter how perfect we try to be, God knows what’s deep down in our hearts.
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)
“If I look holy enough I might impress that cute babe.”
But the good news is, God still loves us in spite of our sin. He showed us by sending His Son Jesus to die for us.
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.” (1 John 3:16a)
He rose from the grave to give us eternal life. All we need to do is put our trust in Him.
“Trust in Him?”
“If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
“Dear Lord Jesus, I’m sorry I have been placing too much emphasis on how I look to others instead of how I look to You. Please forgive me. I now place my trust in You to be my Savior. Thank You for giving me eternal life. Amen.”
