In this life, we idolize many famous people. Everyone has a favorite movie star, sports star, or singer. Because they are famous, we tend to put them up on a pedestal. We look to them to be mentors and role models. Unfortunately, there have been several cases in recent years where these people have gravely disappointed us. Their fall was very public and affected thousands of people. Why have they failed to be the role models we expected them to be? The fact is that they are human just like you and I. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” All includes these famous people. Even the best of the best are subject to sin.
Who then can we look towards to be a role model for us and our children? There is hope for tomorrow. There is a better way! “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6). Jesus Christ is the only role model that will never fail you.
Characteristics of a good role model:
1. Reliable and dependable
A role model should be someone who you can rely on any time day or night. “He [Jesus] hath said, I will never leave thee or forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). Jesus doesn’t use an answering machine or voice mail. He takes each call personally anytime day or night. You can always depend on Jesus.
2. Encouraging
A role model should be an encourager. He should always be willing to lift you up with an encouraging word or deed. “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). No matter what your burdens or struggles are, He is willing to help you with any need. Just ask Him: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). We often fail because of our desire to do everything ourselves.
3. Leads by example
A role model should always lead by example in every way. Jesus never committed a single sin. Even when He faced temptation, His thoughts, speech, and actions were always pure. “[Jesus] was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). “Christ also suffered for us, leaving for us an example, that ye should follow His steps” (1 Peter 2:21). He lived and died for you.
How can Jesus be the role model for my life?
First and foremost, you must recognize that you are a lost sinner destined for Hell and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
Once you are a child of God you can learn what the Bible teaches about Jesus and ask Him to help you follow His example: “Ask and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you.” (Matthew 7:7). There is no better role model!
