A church can have a lot of commendable qualities—friendly people, inspiring music, compelling messages, great small groups,
outstanding community service, and much, much more—but if it does not proclaim the truth, it is worse than worthless.

The Holy Bible is the standard of truth.

Jesus said, “Thy Word is truth.” The truth is that each one of us is going to die someday. It is inevitable. Some people die at a ripe old age. Other people die young. But every one of us will die.

After death comes judgment. We will stand before God to give account and to receive his verdict. If we don’t go to Heaven, we are lost for eternity.

“What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

All the good things we might have gained from church profit nothing if in the end we don’t go to Heaven. The stakes are high.

All of us must be diligent seekers of truth.

Jesus spoke the truth and commissioned his followers to tell the truth. If a church is not telling the truth, it is not being faithful to Jesus. It is also failing its people—those who look to it for guidance. It is leading people to Hell.

Jesus said, “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

The truth is that all of us have sinned. We have failed to measure up to God’s perfect standard. We do not love God as we ought, and we do not love our neighbor as we ought. We fail to give God the honor that is his due, and we fail to treat our fellow humans with kindness and respect as men and women created in God’s image.

The failure to measure up to God’s perfect standard is sin. The Bible says, “All have sinned.” Only one person in history never sinned, and that is Jesus. He is the Righteous One—the only person who ever measured up to God’s perfect standard.

Jesus came into the world to teach us God’s truth and to die on the cross for his people. He took the punishment that we deserve and gives us his perfect righteousness that qualifies us to enter Heaven. If you want to have a relationship with God and live in blessed fellowship with him for all eternity, then you must come by way of the only mediator, Jesus Christ. He is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

If a church tells you, “You’re fine the way you are; you have nothing to worry about,” it is lying. It is not telling the truth.

If a church tells you, “Do the best you can, and you’ll be alright,” it is lying. It is not telling the truth.

If a church tells you, “Mary is the road you must travel to reach Jesus,” it is lying. It is not telling the truth.

What is the way of salvation?

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”

God wants you to love him and to live for him. He wants your worship. He wants you to live out your faith in fellowship with a faithful church that tells the truth. He wants your heart. This is ultimately the way of happiness.
