“They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick … I [Jesus] am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Matthew 9:12,13).
People don’t go to a doctor unless they are sick, and people don’t go to the Great Physician unless they realize they are sick with sin.
There are many sick people in the world that doctors try to heal whether by medicine, therapy, or surgery. However, medical doctors have no treatment for the disease of sin-sickness. Only the Great Physician has the remedy to meet this need, and that is the precious blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on Calvary’s cross to cleanse from all sin—past, present, and future (John 19:34; 1 John 1:7-9; Hebrews 9:14,22).
There was a king named Hezekiah who lived in the days of Isaiah the prophet, and one day he received a message from God to set his house in order for he would die and not live (Isaiah 38). He prayed unto the Lord and cried, after which the Lord said, “I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.” So Hezekiah was given ample time to set his house in order. If you knew that you had only a short time to live, what would you do? Would you be prepared for eternity?
When Jesus was here upon earth, there was a woman who had been sick for twelve years. She tried many doctors but was nothing better but rather grew worse (Mark 5:25-34). When she heard about Jesus, she pressed through the crowd and touched the hem of His garment and fell down before Him and told Him all the truth. Jesus said unto her, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.”
Jesus, the Great Physician, is available today, and you may touch Him by faith to heal your sin-sick soul. Won’t you do this now? He will apply His cleansing blood to all who trust His finished work of redemption as payment for their sins. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him: and with His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). —P.H.C.
The Great Physician now is near,
The sympathizing Jesus.
He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,
O hear the voice of Jesus.
Oh touch the hem of His garment
And thou too shalt be free.
His saving power this very hour
Shall give new life to thee.
