Have you experienced the misery of carrying a heavy burden? It can feel like a massive backpack weighing down your spirit.

To offer encouragement, I’d like to share the heavy burden I once carried and the day when I was set free.

As a young girl, my mother sat me down beside her on the edge of her bed. She wanted to share what it meant to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. With her Bible on her lap, she showed me some important verses.

Everyone is a sinner (Romans 3:23).

No one can be good enough to rid themselves of sin (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Jesus loved all people so much that He died on the cross for us so our sins can be forgiven (Romans 5:8).

We must turn from sin and call on Jesus to forgive us (Romans 10:13).

I began to seriously think about what my mother shared with me.

Over time, the weight of my sin became increasingly burdensome. I felt guilty for all the wrongs I had done.

I vividly recall the day when my heavy burden fell away, and I was set free.

It was on a Sunday morning at the end of the church service. The pastor’s wife reviewed with me the same Bible verses my mother had shared months earlier. That day, I finally called on Jesus.

My prayer went something like this, “Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I understand that You died on the cross and rose from the dead for me. Please forgive me of my sin and come into my life.”

Upon surrendering my life to Jesus, it felt as though a heavy backpack fell from my shoulders. I experienced an overwhelming sense of freedom and peace in my spirit! Joy found me, and I found rest. That was the day I was set free—the most important decision I have ever made!

You too can experience the joy and peace that comes only from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Just saying a prayer does not make you right with God. Rather, it is sincerely calling on Jesus from your heart.

Accepting Jesus Christ does not mean that you will suddenly be perfect, but it does mean that you have a new life in Jesus, and He is always there to help you.

Would you like to experience this freedom too?

Pray something like this and genuinely mean it from your heart:

“Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I understand that You died on the cross and rose from the dead for me. Please forgive me of my sin and come into my life.”

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
