Thank you for your valued service
May you be encouraged to continue doing your best for others.
As you work to serve the needs of those around you, consider these thoughts.
The Value of Serving
Our society usually determines a person’s importance by their wealth or status or achievements. However, a person’s true value is found in their service for others.
Jesus is a wonderful example of this. Because He is the Son of God—the greatest person who ever walked the earth—we might expect to find Him being served and waited on “hand and foot.” However, His entire life was characterized by service for others.
The One Who Serves
One day His twelve disciples were squabbling among themselves about which of them was the most important. They were contemplating their accomplishments and comparing their abilities when Jesus turned their thinking upside-down. If they wanted to be greater, He said they should humble themselves; if they wanted to lead, they were to serve others. Jesus reminded them: “I am among you as He that serveth.”
The Ultimate Service
God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, not to be served but to serve mankind and sacrifice His life for our sins. Because of the ultimate act of service accomplished when Jesus died on the cross and rose again, forgiveness of sin and eternal life are freely given to those who repent of their sin and put their trust in Christ and God’s Word.
The Ultimate Reward
Christ doesn’t promise a life of ease as we follow His example in serving others but He does promise rest to those who labor under heavy burdens. “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
It is in serving each other that we achieve greatness in God’s eyes. He has promised Heaven to those who trust Him, and He has promised rewards to those who love Him and serve Him faithfully. May we live our lives in such a way that we will hear Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).
