A motorist entered Interstate 70 in Kansas intending to go west. In the early morning fog he was disoriented, and had taken the approach he sincerely believed to be the right one. However, after traveling a short distance he saw headlights coming straight at him through the fog. Quickly swerving to the side of the road, he slammed on his brakes and muttered to himself, “What’s that crazy driver doing?” While he sat along the side of the road, more and more cars passed by, and he began to realize that he was the “crazy driver!” Though he was sincere in believing he was headed west, in reality he was going east in the westbound lane!
Your philosophy about spiritual matters might make you like this well-meaning driver. You may honestly believe that you are going the right way, but if you are headed in the wrong direction, it does not matter how sincere you are. The driver’s sincerity was genuine, but his belief was wrong. He was sincere but not safe, and could have been literally “dead wrong” too.
Sincerity is important, but what you believe is crucial. The Bible says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man”—just as it did to the motorist—but Scripture goes on to say, “the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 14:12). Not only was the traveler getting farther away from his desired destination with each passing moment, but he was headed for an inevitable crash if he had proceeded on his wrong course.
Have you ever stopped to consider whether or not your belief is swiftly carrying you in the wrong direction? Is it right or wrong according to divine standards? These questions can only be answered by consulting the revelation God has given in His Word. If you are traveling in the fog of unbelief or human religion you are in imminent danger of eternal ruin. But you need not go on blindly. Stop and listen to the Bible, the only authority of truth on this most vital matter of your soul’s salvation.
The Lord Jesus Christ did not believe there are many right ways. In fact, He declared Himself to be the only Saviour: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6). The rest of the Bible agrees: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Is your belief in His name or not? Are you on this way? This is the vital question. It is not at all a matter of being sincere in whatever you believe, but rather a matter of trusting Jesus Christ as your Saviour.
He died for you and rose again, providing the only righteous payment that can be made for your sin. When you put your faith in Him, all the merit of who He is and what He did at Calvary is applied on your behalf, assuring you of your eternal acceptance by a holy God who cannot be approached in any other way.
I urge you to stop your present course apart from Christ without a moment’s hesitation, repent of your sins to God, and trust Jesus alone for salvation. This will change your destination from certain eternal death in Hell to endless life, joy, and peace in Heaven.
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).
