One day your heart will stop.

Where will you go when you leave this world?

Are you good enough to go to Heaven?

• To get into Heaven, you must be righteous.

• The way to find out if you are good is to judge yourself by God’s standard of righteousness: The 10 Commandments.

• If you keep them 100%, you will be good enough to go to Heaven.

• If you break them, even in the slightest, you have a debt to God’s law, and all debts must be paid.

Let’s look at a few of them.

Have you ever...

• told a lie? (Exodus 20:16)

• taken something that doesn't belong to you? (Exodus 20:15)

• dishonored or disobeyed your parents? (Exodus 20:12)

• looked at another person with lust (adultery)? (Exodus 20:14, Matthew 5:27-28)

• been angry with someone and called them a name (murder)? (Exodus 20:13, Matthew 5:21-22)

• taken God's name in vain or used it carelessly (blasphemy)? (Exodus 20:7)

The 10 Commandments are the law, God is the judge, and we are all guilty lawbreakers. When you break God’s law, it is called sin. The Bible says we all have sinned. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Like a judge sentencing a lawbreaker to death for his crimes, God has given you and I the death penalty for our sins. “For the wages of sin is death...” (Romans 6:23).

The Bad News

What satisfies justice is doing the time for your crime or making a payment for your debt to the law.

You cannot be set free by...

• asking for forgiveness

• “changing your ways” to become a better person

• confessing to the judge

• hoping your good outweighs the bad

Your debt MUST be paid. Time or a payment!

If God sentences a lawbreaker to Hell, He would be doing what is legal and right. God is eternal, and when we break His moral law, the punishment is eternal. Revelation 20:15 says, “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

However, if someone pays your penalty, God will do what is legal and right and will let you go with justice being satisfied. In God’s courtroom, you don’t need your “goodness.” You need a payment!

The Good News

The payment has already been made for you.

God is a spirit. He entered into His creation as a man: Jesus Christ. “For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9).

He wrote a check for you with His blood when He died on the cross for your sins. “In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

The last thing He said before dying was, “It is finished.” Meaning, the debt of your sin has been paid.

He died, was buried, and rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures, and is alive now in Heaven (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

To find forgiveness and eternal life, turn from trusting in anything you do, and instead trust what God did for you (repent).

Receive the Payment

God offers salvation by grace. Grace is not earned or deserved; it is a free gift. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Do you believe that Jesus Christ died to pay for your sins with His blood?

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

To be saved, you may pray something like this in your heart: “Lord, I know that I am a sinner, and my good works cannot save me from Hell. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins, was buried, and rose again. Thank you, Jesus, for being my Savior and shedding Your blood to pay for my sins.”

Your New Life in Christ

When you trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour, God’s word tells you that you can know you are saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).

• Salvation is not earned by good works; neither is salvation kept by good works (1 Peter 1:5).

• Rather, we demonstrate our new life in Christ and show our love for Him through obedience and good works.

• Praying and studying the Bible are two of the most important things we can do to deepen our fellowship with God.
