WHEN DOUBTS ARISE, ARE YOU REASSURING YOURSELF WITH ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE DONE?
- I asked God for forgiveness
- I prayed for Jesus to save me
- I responded to an altar call and repeated a prayer of salvation
- I asked Jesus to come into my heart
- I accepted Jesus as my personal Lord and Saviour
- I got baptized to wash away my sin
- I confessed my sins to be forgiven
- I repented of my sins and cleaned up my life to be saved
Sometimes I doubt my salvation, but I ___________________ and that is why I think I am going to Heaven.
Your answer above could be filled in with anything from the previous list, or it could be any other type of religious work or act “you” have done.
If this is you, please pay attention. Salvation does not come by ANYTHING we do, no matter how well meaning and sincere.
First, in your heart, ask God to show you if you are lost and deceived.
Second, ask God to give you the faith that is needed to believe the truth of His words.
HOW DO WE RECEIVE THE GIFT OF GRACE THROUGH FAITH ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE?
First, we must agree with God that we have sinned against Him by breaking His moral law. Our sin has an eternal consequence.
The 10 Commandments are the law, God is the judge, and we are guilty lawbreakers. When you break God’s law, it is called sin. The Bible says we all have sinned. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
Like a judge sentencing a lawbreaker to death for his crimes, God has given you and I the death penalty for our sins. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).
God is eternal, and when we break His moral law, the punishment is eternal. “And whosoever was not written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).
However, if someone pays your penalty, God can do what is legal and right and let you go with justice being satisfied. In God’s courtroom, there’s nothing you can do to reconcile yourself. You need a payment!
THE GOOD NEWS
The payment has already been made for you.
God is a spirit. He entered into His creation as a man: Jesus Christ. “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9).
He wrote a check for you with His blood when He died on the cross for your sins. “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:7).
The last thing He said before dying was, “It is finished.” Meaning, the debt of your sin has been paid.
He died, was buried, and rose again on the third day exactly as the Old Testament scriptures predicted, and is alive now in Heaven (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
Receive the Payment
God offers salvation by grace. Grace is not earned or deserved; it is a free gift. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Do you believe that Jesus Christ died to pay for your sins with His blood?
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
When you call out to God, it might sound something like this …
Lord, I know that I am a sinner, and my good works cannot save me from Hell. I believe that Jesus Christ died for my sins, was buried, and rose again. Thank you, Jesus, for being my Saviour and shedding your blood to pay for my sins.
Your New Life in Christ
When you accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour, God’s Word tells you that you can know you are saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit.
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the son of God” (1 John 5:13).
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).
Salvation is not earned by good works; neither is salvation kept by good works (1 Peter 1:5).
We can show our love for Christ by obedience and doing good works, but that is for close fellowship with God, not salvation.
Prayer and studying the Bible are two of the most important things we can do to stay close to God.
