One recurring theme in the Old Testament regards innocent blood being shed to cover sin.

Adam & Eve

After Adam & Eve sinned, Genesis says, “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons” (Genesis 3:7). Fig leaves could be likened to religion today. They signify man’s attempt to get right with God. “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21). This was the first death on Earth—the innocent blood of an animal was spilled on man’s behalf.

Cain and Abel

Cain was a farmer and he brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. And Abel brought a sheep for an offering and the Lord respected his offering. But unto Cain the Lord did not accept his offering (Genesis 4:3-5). After this, Cain killed his brother. The first murder.

The Passover

The Passover was implemented when Pharaoh would not let the children of Israel leave Egypt. So, the Lord told Moses that the death angel would pass through the land of Egypt and smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt—both man and beast, Jews and Egyptians. They were told to take the blood of a lamb and put it on the two side posts and the upper door post of their homes. When the death angel saw the blood, he would pass over that house (Exodus 12). Hence the name “Passover.”

This brings us to...

The Scapegoat

In Leviticus 16:7-10, we are told about the process by which the Jews obtained forgiveness for sin. Once a year, the high priest took two goats. One was killed and its blood was sprinkled on the mercy seat. After this, with bloody hands, he held the head of the live goat and confessed the sins of Israel. The live goat was then taken and released into the wilderness. This goat disappeared, along with the sins of Israel. This had to be done once every year.

Jesus Christ has now become our Eternal Scapegoat to all who receive Him. Understand that innocent (animal’s) blood had to be shed in times past to cover sins. All this pointed to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. His blood was shed once and for all to provide eternal life to all who would see their need of a Savior, accept it personally, and claim it for themselves.

There is one final thing to consider

What historical happening was and is so important that everything that has or ever will happen is placed in time as having occurred before it (B.C.) or after (A.D.)? Only the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Even atheists who say there is no God can’t get away from this date. Every time a document is signed, it is also dated. Birthdates. Gravestones.

Place your trust in NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS.

Nothing but the blood of jesus

“What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh, precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow:
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon, this I see,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my cleansing this my plea,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can for sin atone,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Naught of good that I have done,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Glory! Glory! This I sing-
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
All my praise for this I bring –
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”
