Someone dumped a half-grown kitten in the woods near our home.
She sat shivering at the edge of the road where dark forest meets the frost-covered grasses of a mountain meadow.
The kitten was unwanted, unloved, abandoned on a lonely morning to the cold and a forest full of predators.
Have you lived that moment?
I have.
The quiet despair of a strange place, the biting cold of neglect, the danger and fear, the vast loneliness.
We named her Whisper, because despite her harsh start in life, she is a gentle cat with the softest voice. A gentle whisper.
Our beloved Newfoundland dog had recently died, and Whisper’s small meow reminded us God was still with us. He doesn’t always appear like a blast of dynamite. More often, God steps into the darkness of our world with a quiet whisper that changes everything.
“It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11b-12
Rescued from the wild, with its freedoms and fears, Whisper found a home with us. When I settle into my loft to write, she sleeps on my feet. When I read by the fire, she purrs in my lap. At night, she curls against my husband’s side.
Nevertheless, someone didn’t want her.
If you feel unwanted today, stop and listen closely.
Was Whisper any less valuable because someone dumped her? Less gentle, less loving, less beautiful because she was abandoned at the end of a road? No, she was not. Whisper was a gift from God when we were hurting.
You are valuable.
You are loved.
You are a gift.
Are there people who don’t want you? Take heart, for there is one who does. There is one who loves you deeply, who seeks you, who rescues.
Lost kittens. Lost sheep. Lost people.
Jesus has come to find you. He calls you to trust and follow him, to love like he loves.
God does not leave us lost, alone, and struggling to survive.
He gives us the very strength of Heaven when we choose to be his.
Found.
Loved.
And able to love in return.
Just like the lost kitten God used to whisper hope to our hearts when we were broken and grieving.
A WHISPER OF Hope

“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders.” Luke 15:4-5, NLT
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” John 10:11, NIV

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12, NIV
A Prayer for Rescue:
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for searching for me like a shepherd looking for a lost sheep . . .
or a lost kitten. Thank you for loving me enough to die for me. I believe in your power to rescue me and give me a fresh start. I choose to follow you. Thank you
for your gift of eternal life in Heaven and help me to grow more like you each day.
Amen.
