High school is now over. We are all headed in different directions. No one really knows exactly where we are going to end up ... or does someone? There is One who really does know. He knows everything about your past, present, and every step you will take in your future. Psalm 139:2 says, “You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar.” High school seemed great for the most part, but where are you headed next? We will all be faced with so many choices: choices that will worry us until we know that the ones we made were in fact the right ones. College, relationships, and careers will all be headed our way, but there is one choice that will not be as stressful. This choice just so happens to be the most important decision you will ever make. The fees have already been paid for in full for you and me. This choice is a full-ride scholarship to heaven. There is only one way to obtain this scholarship: “I am the Gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved” (John 10:9). Jesus is our full-ride scholarship to heaven because God sent Him here to die for our sins. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Every person sins. Adam and Eve were first created in God’s image, but their disobedience to God brought about the fall of man. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Because of this, absolutely nothing can help you earn your way to heaven. Being baptized as a baby, being “confirmed,” doing good works, or simply stating that you are a Christian will not get you into heaven. “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death” (2 Corinthians 7:10). This means that if you have a change of mind away from sinful thoughts and actions and take God’s side, believing that when Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross He did so for your sins, then God will forgive your sins. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).
Apart from the Lord Jesus Christ, there will be no eternal life for you in heaven, for He said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Jesus paid an extremely high price for you and me. He not only endured the physical pain and suffering of the cross but was forsaken by a sin-hating God when He died for our sins (Matthew 27:26-46; 1 Corinthians 15:3). If you die in your sins, you will spend eternity in hell. “Whoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15). Hell is not a myth. Hell is forever, a separation from God, a permanent punishment for sin and unbelief. “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out of the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:8,9). God is a fair God. He has offered salvation to all. He will punish unbelievers and will open the gates of heaven for His believers.
Please, do not pass up this full-ride scholarship. Do not put it off. You are given today, but you are not promised tomorrow. At any moment your time could be up. Without Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you will go to the lake of fire.
Congratulations, Class of 2011! Always remember that “With God, nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).—Nichole Willhite
