Reality TV viewing has become an American pastime. Makeover shows are among the favorites. From beauty and fashion to health and fitness to homes and rooms, makeovers intrigue us. Many makeovers are done because of discontent. Vanity and pride compel a person to undergo procedures to make them more attractive. Other makeovers are done out of necessity due to inadequate living conditions, accidents, or birth defects.
My second makeover wasn’t the result of vanity, but rather out of necessity following an automobile accident where my face hit the steering wheel. Before going into the operating room, the surgeon explained to me what he could and could not do. The broken nose was the easy part. The split lip was the real challenge along with placing screws and plates in the broken facial bones. The discoloration and swelling took weeks to disappear. Some scars remain.
My first makeover was necessary because of a “birth defect” that is common to every human being on earth. The defect is a sinful nature that we inherited from Adam and Eve, the first people created in the image of God. Sadly, they disobeyed God’s one rule and ate fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (Genesis 2,3). As a result, sin entered into the world.
“Through one man [Adam] sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12).
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Because of God’s great love for us, He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who came into the world as a tiny baby, grew up, and suffered the unjust death of crucifixion in our place. Because He had no sin, His death and subsequent resurrection paid the ransom so that we could be “born again”—the ultimate, most extreme makeover ever!
“Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.” (Romans 5:18,19).
God did His part. All you have to do to get your free eternal makeover is to admit your defect (sin), confess it to God, and accept His gift of salvation based solely on His love and Jesus’ shed blood as payment of your sin.
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18).
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Your makeover won’t make you a sinless person while on this earth; scars of the sinful life may remain. The final results of our ultimate makeover will only be fully revealed when we eventually enter our heavenly home at the time of our death or Christ’s return for His believers.
An early makeover show was “Queen for a Day,” which was fun but temporary; however, with the makeover of being “born again,” you will be a child of the King, which makes you a prince or princess forever!
