In the 1987 movie, The Princess Bride, a farm boy named Westley goes through adventures and fights villains to save his true love, Buttercup, from the clutches of the evil Prince Humperdinck. At the end of the movie, Westley finally defeats the evil prince and Westley and Princess Buttercup live happily ever after!
This is very similar to what God’s Son Jesus Christ did for humanity. Salvation is offered to those who trust Him, who then become the bride of Christ. In John 3:16-17 we read: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
How do you become part of the bride of Christ? You have to realize you are a lost sinner and deserve God’s judgment: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and that “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). You will be saved when you turn to God in a change of mind and put your faith in Jesus Christ.
Just like Buttercup needed to trust Westley to rescue her, we need to trust Jesus to save us. The Bible says: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Then we can look forward to the joy of Heaven when we will be married to Christ like it says in Ephesians 5:27: “and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.”
Becoming part of the bride of Christ can’t be worked for or earned; nor does trying to pray a prayer make one His bride (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is simply through believing the good news that Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised the third day, and appeared to many witnesses (see 1 Corinthians 15:3-5). Put your faith in Jesus to become part of His bride today. Then you, too, will live happily ever after!
