e hear and read about finding a “Higher Power” or “a Power greater than ourselves” in alcohol and drug addiction treatment programs, supermarket magazines, and even journals written for doctors who are told to do this for themselves and to encourage their patients to do the same. Some people speak of finding a “Higher Power” or of having a “spiritual” or “religious” experience when they climb mountains, meditate, chant, or attend treatment programs.
So how do we find this “Higher Power,” and how will we know when we’ve found it? The only place to find the true “Higher Power” is in God’s Word, the Bible, which proclaims the gospel of Christ, which “is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.”1 The Bible reveals to us the “Mighty God,”2 the omnipotent One by whose power all things have been created. Jesus was proven to be the Son of God—true God Himself—because of the perfect, sinless life He lived, by the miracles He performed, and because He rose from the dead after His crucifixion.3
What else do we learn about God from the Bible? In addition to being powerful and “the only true God,”4 He is holy and hates sin.5 He knows everything we do, say, or think.6 Because He is holy, He must judge all sin.7 But He also loves the world and sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins and to rise again so that all who believe on Him might be saved from judgment and have everlasting life.8
According to the Bible, we are not free to find any “Higher Power” that happens to suit us. The Lord Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”9 “He who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”10 There is only one true God, and the only way we can come to God is through faith—believing in His Son, Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
We also learn about ourselves in the Bible. We are all sinners.11 We have had evil thoughts12 and foolish thoughts, which God says are sin.13 We have not loved God with all our heart, soul, and mind, or our neighbor as ourselves as God has commanded.14 We have often failed to do what we knew was right, which is sin15 and we have often done things we knew were wrong. It is because we have all sinned that every one of us must turn to the Lord Jesus Christ—the only Savior from sin—in order to escape God’s wrath and judgment.16 It is not enough to “turn over a new leaf” or overcome bad habits. Only the blood of Christ has power to take away our sin and make us clean in God’s sight.17 “We are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags.”18 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us.”19
Won’t you confess to God that you are a sinner and trust in Jesus Christ as your only Lord and Savior today? He is the only One who can heal your real problem, which is not simply your desire for alcohol, drugs, immoral sex, gambling or other things, but your being a hell-bound sinner who has deeply offended the Holy God. By virtue of the terrible suffering and death of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross when He bore God’s righteous judgment and penalty for your sins, He is able to save you from the penalty that your sins deserve—eternity in the lake of fire.
If you will place your trust and dependence upon Christ for your soul’s salvation, you will find not just a “Higher Power” but come to know “the exceeding greatness of His [God’s] power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead.”20 This is the highest power in all the universe, and it alone can empower a believer in Christ to live a victorious Christian life over all the powers of evil and sin.
