The modern world has never faced a pandemic like this before, causing widespread quarantine, loss of jobs, and death on a global scale. Should we fear? Should we hide?

Some think we are safe when we have our trust in Jesus Christ. And this is certainly true in one sense, for Jesus has taken away the curse of God’s judgment through His sacrifice on the Cross. But does this mean that Christians can never get sick, or be infected with COVID-19?

The Bible promises us the gift of eternal life when we place our trust in Jesus, but does not make promises that we shall never fall sick. Verses that seem to promise freedom from illness and disease (Psalm 91:10, or Psalm 103:3) are written for the Jews under the Law, and were not meant to be taken as a promise to all in every generation. If a person wants to use these texts to claim freedom from disease and sickness, they must also be careful to obey all of God’s Law in the Old Testament, since these promises are conditional on doing so. It is clear that no one can keep God’s Law perfectly, for the scripture says that “ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

We can have victory through our Lord Jesus Christ, but the victory He offers us is victory over death (not disease). This victory over death will be realized when Christians are raised up to be with Christ and receive their glorified bodies (see 1 Corinthians 15:51-57). This passage explains that our Lord Jesus Christ will take our corruptible bodies and transform them into incorruptible, immortal bodies when the Lord catches away His Church.

This resurrection of the bodies of the saints takes place at the time of the rapture. It is not till then that these bodies of corruption will be transformed. Until then, we are all subject to disease, pain, sorrow and even COVID-19. No one is exempt, because we are all sinners. Even though Christians have been granted a new life in Christ, it is a spiritual life. Christians are still subject to sickness and death, and that is why believers get malaria, cancer, colds and flu bugs just like anyone else.

Our true victory takes place when we place our trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. When this happens we are born again, and the judgment against our sins will be pardoned. The Holy Spirit lives in each believer and gives power to live a godly life and to find victory over sinful behavior. One day the struggle between the flesh and the spirit will be over, when believers are changed and translated into heaven to be with and like the Lord Jesus forever.

If you want this victory over death itself, then trust in Jesus Christ today. Ask Him to cleanse you from sin and to empower you to live a godly life. The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Remember salvation in the Bible means to be spared from God’s judgment against your sin. It does not imply that you will never get sick or contract a deadly virus like COVID-19. So, be wise, stay safe, and don’t take unnecessary risks. Most of all, make sure you have put your trust completely in Jesus Christ for salvation, and not on any good things you are doing to try and earn God’s favor.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9)
