We all want our rights. Parental rights. Homeowner rights. Taxpayer rights. Civil rights. Voting rights. Right to keep and bear arms, etc.
The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Thomas Jefferson wrote these words in 1776 as the United States was declaring its independence from Great Britain. Unfortunately, sometimes these unalienable Rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are revoked due to various circumstances. Often they are revoked because of our own actions; other times, by the actions and decisions of others.
Jefferson was correct in saying that all men are created. We do have a Creator. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth … So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:1, 27).
Adam and Eve were the first created humans. They were given the right to choose to obey or disobey God’s one rule: do not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They exercised their right and chose to disobey God’s law. This brought sin and eventual death to all mankind. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
God so loved the world (John 3:16) that He made a provision for the sin debt to be paid. The Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, became the sinless Son of Man, born of Mary (Christmas). He lived on earth for 33 years before being crucified. He was guiltless but willingly died in place of the guilty. He was resurrected three days later (Easter) and returned to heaven to prepare a place for those who believe.
Jefferson wrote that all men were created equal, and we are equal in God’s sight. Regardless of the inequalities among the human race, God’s love looks beyond economic status and race. God is not a respecter of people. “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him” (Acts 10:34-35). He loves each one of us unconditionally and offers salvation to all. “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:11-12). This is a right that will not be revoked or rescinded no matter what as long as you live.
Later Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).
Those who admit their own sinfulness and believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He provides the only way to eternal life with God through His death and resurrection will have eternal Life, Liberty and true Happiness (Joy).
