It was a rainy Saturday morning and Jim Jensen had slept late. Going downstairs, he was surprised not to find Mom at home. He saw that his car was gone, but he remembered that Dad intended to drive it to work that day. Turning on the TV, Jim was surprised to find a newscast that late in the morning. They were discussing a rash of early morning accidents. As the camera moved from accident to accident, Jim thought he recognized one of the cars. A close-up shot revealed his car imbedded in the front end of a big semi. The truck driver was telling how the car had suddenly veered across the median and struck him head-on.

Panic stricken, Jim wondered what had happened to his Dad, and where was Mom? The reporter was saying that the police had been unable to account for the drivers of many of the wrecked cars and that reports of mysterious disappearances and accidents were coming in from all over the country. Emergency switchboards were jammed.

By this time, Jim was completely unnerved. What’s going on anyway, he wondered? He was brought to his senses by the phone ringing. It was his girlfriend, Judy Randolph. Judy’s Mom and baby sister had “disappeared” but she and her Dad were “OK.” “Jim,” said Judy, “I think I know what’s happened, and I’m scared! Dad laughs at me, but I think the Lord has come. Mom often talked about the Lord’s coming, but Dad said it was a fantasy.” Jim broke in, “My folks believed something about that too, but I just laughed at them.”

“Our Sunday School lesson last week was on the Lord’s coming,” Judy said, “but you weren’t there. Our teacher gave us a list of verses to look up, and briefly explained them. I didn’t look at the list until this morning, but I’ve been reading the verses and they are the only explanation for what’s happening. I think it’s TOO LATE for us, forever!”

Jim interrupted, “But Judy, we always went to church and never did anything really bad. What do you mean it’s too late for us?”

“Listen,” said Judy, “I’ll come right over.” A few minutes later, the Randolph car came to a screeching stop in the driveway, and Judy ran into the house waving a Bible and a piece of paper. “Here’s the list my teacher gave me,” said Judy. The first verse was John 14:1-3:

In My Father’s house are many mansions … I go to prepare a place for you, and … I will come again to receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Next came 1 Thessalonians 4:16,17:

For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven … and the dead IN CHRIST shall rise first. Then we [Christians] which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them … to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Judy spoke, “Our teacher explained that these verses were written to Christians. Your Dad once tried to explain to me that a Christian is one who has surrendered his life to Jesus Christ, personally accepting Him as Saviour. He then…” “Yes, yes, I know all that,” said Jim. “My Mother was always harping at me to get saved. Let’s see the rest of the verses.”

Next was the parable in Matthew 25:6-13, where the Lord is likened to the Bridegroom coming for His bride:

And at midnight, there was a cry made, Behold the Bridegroom cometh … and the Bridegroom came and they that were ready went in with Him … and the door was shut. Afterwards also came the other virgins saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But He answered and said, … I know you not.

“Jim,” continued Judy, “God has shut the door of heaven. We’re too late!” Jim again interrupted, “I guess I always assumed that God loved everybody, and that everyone would go to heaven.” “Our teacher explained that, too, from John 3:16-18 and 36,” said Judy. “The 16th verse tells of God’s love for the whole world, shown in sending His Son to die for us. However, the 18th and 36th verses show that if we don’t accept what Jesus has done for us, God’s eternal wrath is upon us. Here, Jim, read these verses yourself.”

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever beIieveth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life…. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is CONDEMNED ALREADY, because he hath not believed in the Name of the only begotten Son of God…. He that believeth on the Son HATH everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him.

“What’s going to happen to us now?” asked Jim. Judy answered, “Our teacher talked about a terrible judgment upon us. Here, read Revelation 20:11-15.”

And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; … and I saw the [resurrected, unsaved] dead, small and great, stand before God: and the books were opened and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books…. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Judy and Jim sat staring at each other, not knowing what to say, for they both realized that, for them, it was eternally TOO LATE! What a terrible condition to be in—eternally shut away from God and headed for the outer darkness of hell forever, with no possible way of escape.

Dear reader, for your sake, I’m glad to say that this story has not as yet taken place. However, it will shortly take place in millions of homes, only with different names and circumstances, for the Lord is coming soon for all those who own Him as Lord and Saviour, before He judges the world.

The question is, then, “Do you want to meet Jesus as your Saviour or Judge?” One way or the other, you ARE going to meet Him face to face and bow your knees to Him (Romans 14:11,12). Even as you read this, won’t you make sure that you meet Him as Saviour? Tell Him that you know you are a sinner, for His Word says, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and then simply accept Him as your Substitute. His sacrifice on Calvary’s cross was for your sins. When you trust Jesus as your Saviour, God eternally saves you from the penalty incurred by your sin, for He sees you fully cleansed from your sin by the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7). You are thus in Christ, eternally safe and secure. Read with me Romans 10:9-13:

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus [or, Jesus as Lord], and shalt believe in thine heart, [really believe with your innermost self] that God hath raised Him [Jesus] from the dead, THOU SHALT BE SAVED. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Dear reader, if you act on these verses, you will have the joy of soon meeting your Saviour face to face at His coming for you. Otherwise, that terrible cry, “TOO LATE” will soon be yours to utter for all eternity. Can you gamble with such terrible consequences? We would love to be of further assistance to you in these most important eternal matters. Please feel free to contact us. —R. P. Daniel
